Since Tversky argued that similarity judgments violate the three metric axioms, asymmetrical similarity judgments have been particularly challenging for standard, geometric models of similarity, such as multidimensional scaling. According to Tversky, asymmetrical similarity judgments are driven by differences in salience or extent of knowledge. However, the notion of salience has been difficult to operationalize, especially for perceptual stimuli for which there are no apparent differences in extent of knowledge.

Article Synopsis
  • Asthma attacks in adults can be triggered by respiratory infections, and there's interest in using bacterial lysates to help manage these attacks.
  • A study was conducted with 75 adults with severe asthma, where they received either a bacterial lysate (OM-85) or a placebo over six months to see if it would reduce asthma exacerbations and improve lung function.
  • Results showed no significant difference in asthma attack frequency between the two groups after 18 months, but there was an improvement in lung function and a lower detection rate of viruses during infections in the OM-85 group.

Article Synopsis
  • Caring for patients at the end of life in the ICU can lead to emotional distress and burnout among nurses, but the specific factors contributing to this distress are not well understood.
  • A study involving 100 nurses revealed that factors such as patients' suffering, loss of dignity, and overall quality of death significantly influenced nurses' emotional distress.
  • Additionally, family dynamics, including fears about death and unrealistic expectations, were also identified as contributors to nurses' emotional challenges, suggesting that improving patient care and family support may benefit nurses' well-being.

Inhalation of fluorocarbon polymers can cause pulmonary toxicity. Although multiple cases of lung injury have been reported, cellular characterization of the associated alveolitis occurring acutely after inhalation is limited. We report the case of a previously healthy woman who presented at our Emergency Department with an acute pneumonitis following inhalation of a fluorocarbon polymer-based rain-proofing spray.

Background: Low NT-proBNP levels are associated with an uncomplicated course in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE). The aim of this multicenter management study was to investigate the safety of home treatment of patients with PE with low (< 500 pg mL(-1)) NT-proBNP.

Methods And Results: Hemodynamically stable outpatients with acute PE and NT-proBNP level < 500 pg mL(-1) were included.
