In this paper, the statistical distributions of the position and the size of the evaporating droplets after a cough are evaluated, thus characterizing the inherent stochasticity of respiratory releases due to turbulence. For that, ten independent realizations of a cough with realistic initial conditions and in a room at 20 °C and 40% relative humidity were performed with large eddy simulations and Lagrangian tracking of the liquid phase. It was found that although turbulence decreases far from the emitter, it results in large variations in the spatial distribution of the droplets.

The structure of autoignition in a mixing layer between fully-burnt or partially-burnt combustion products from a methane-air flame at = 0.85 and a methane-air mixture of a leaner equivalence ratio has been studied with transient diffusion flamelet calculations. This configuration is relevant to scavenged pre-chamber natural-gas engines, where the turbulent jet ejected from the pre-chamber may be quenched or may be composed of fully-burnt products.

Simulations of a pilot-stabilised flame in a uniformly dispersed ethanol spray are performed using a Doubly Conditional Moment Closure (DCMC) model. The DCMC equation for spray combustion is derived, using the mixture fraction and the reaction progress variable as conditioning variables, including droplet evaporation and differential diffusion terms. A set of closure sub-models is suggested to allow for a first, preliminary application of the DCMC model to the test case presented here.

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) with the Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) combustion model of swirling ethanol spray flames have been performed in conditions close to blow-off for which a wide database of experimental measurements is available for both flame and spray characterization. The solution of CMC equations exploits a three-dimensional unstructured code with a first order closure for chemical source terms. It is shown that LES/CMC is able to properly capture the flame structure at different conditions and agrees reasonably well with the measurements both in terms of mean flame shape and dynamic behaviour of the flame evaluated in terms of local extinctions and statistics of the lift-off height.

This article reports nonlinear bifurcations observed in a laboratory scale, turbulent combustor operating under imperfectly premixed mode with global equivalence ratio as the control parameter. The results indicate that the dynamics of thermoacoustic instability correspond to quasi-periodic bifurcation to low-dimensional, deterministic chaos, a route that is common to a variety of dissipative nonlinear systems.
