Wilms tumor gene 1 expression as a predictive marker for relapse and survival after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for myelodysplastic syndromes.

Relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a major concern in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), but the role of Wilms tumor gene 1 (WT1) as a predictive marker for post-HSCT relapse remains to be validated. We measured WT1 transcript levels by real-time quantitative PCR from marrow samples of 82 MDS patients who underwent transplantation between 2009 and 2013. Pre-HSCT WT1 expression weakly correlated with marrow blast counts or International Prognostic Scoring System scores and failed to predict post-transplantation relapse.

Longitudinal monitoring adipose-derived stem cell survival by PET imaging hexadecyl-4-¹²⁴I-iodobenzoate in rat myocardial infarction model.

This study aims to monitor how the change of cell survival of transplanted adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) responds to myocardial infarction (MI) via the hexadecyl-4-(124)I-iodobenzoate ((124)I-HIB) mediated direct labeling method in vivo. Stem cells have shown the potential to improve cardiac function after MI. However, monitoring of the fate of transplanted stem cells at target sites is still unclear.

Mechanical deformation mechanisms and properties of amyloid fibrils.

Amyloid fibrils have recently received attention due to their remarkable mechanical properties, which are highly correlated with their biological functions. We have studied the mechanical deformation mechanisms and properties of amyloid fibrils as a function of their length scales by using atomistic simulations. It is shown that the length of amyloid fibrils plays a role in their deformation and fracture mechanisms in such a way that the competition between shear and bending deformations is highly dependent on the fibril length, and that as the fibril length increases, so does the bending strength of the fibril while its shear strength decreases.

We analyzed the outcome of stem cell transplantation (SCT) for 59 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with t(8;21). The 5-year overall and disease-free survival (OS and DFS) were 70.2 and 68.

Eosinophilic pleuritis due to sparganum: a case report.

Sparganosis is a rare parasitic disease caused by migrating plerocercoid tapeworm larva of the genus Spirometra. Infection in humans is mainly caused by the ingestion of raw or inadequately cooked flesh of infected frogs, snakes, and chickens. Here, we report a rare case of a 45-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with left lower chest pain.

Strongyloides myopotami (Secernentea: Strongyloididae) from the intestine of feral nutrias (Myocastor coypus) in Korea.

Surveys on helminthic fauna of the nutria, Myocastor coypus, have seldom been performed in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we describe Strongyloides myopotami (Secernentea: Strongyloididae) recovered from the small intestine of feral nutrias. Total 10 adult nutrias were captured in a wetland area in Gimhae-si (City), Gyeongsangnam-do (Province) in April 2013.

Efficacy and safety of ruxolitinib in Asian patients with myelofibrosis.

Myelofibrosis is characterized by progressive cytopenias, bone marrow fibrosis, splenomegaly and severe constitutional symptoms. In the phase 3 Controlled Myelofibrosis Study with Oral JAK Inhibitor Treatment (COMFORT) studies, ruxolitinib, a potent Janus kinase 1 (JAK1)/JAK2 inhibitor, provided substantial improvements in splenomegaly, symptoms, quality-of-life measures and overall survival compared with placebo or best available therapy. No assessments of the efficacy and safety of ruxolitinib have been conducted in Asian patients.

Impact of extramedullary plasmacytomas on outcomes according to treatment approach in newly diagnosed symptomatic multiple myeloma.

The prognostic impact of extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) on newly diagnosed symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM) was evaluated in the context of treatment approach including autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and chemotherapy alone. A total of 275 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed MM were included, and 54 patients (19.6 %) had EMPs at diagnosis.

Identification of molecular and cytogenetic risk factors for unfavorable core-binding factor-positive adult AML with post-remission treatment outcome analysis including transplantation.

Emerging molecular studies have identified a subgroup of patients with unfavorable core-binding factor-positive (CBF)-AML who should be treated by intensified post-remission treatments. We analyzed 264 adults with CBF-AML from 2002 to 2011, and focused on 206 patients who achieved CR after standard '3+7' induction chemotherapy. Patients who achieved CR with an available donor were treated with allogeneic hematopoietic SCT (allo-HSCT, n=115) and the rest were treated with autologous (auto) HSCT (n=72) or chemotherapy alone (n=19).

Patterns of failure and prognostic factors in resected extrahepatic bile duct cancer: implication for adjuvant radiotherapy.

Purpose: To find the applicability of adjuvant radiotherapy for extrahepatic bile duct cancer (EBDC), we analyzed the pattern of failure and evaluate prognostic factors of locoregional failure after curative resection without adjuvant treatment.

Materials And Methods: In 97 patients with resected EBDC, the location of tumor was classified as proximal (n = 26) and distal (n = 71), using the junction of the cystic duct and common hepatic duct as the dividing point. Locoregional failure sites were categorized as follows: the hepatoduodenal ligament and tumor bed, the celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery, and other sites.

Comparison of commercial genetic-testing services in Korea with 23andMe service.

Introduction: Genetic testing services for disease prediction, drug responses, and traits are commercially available by several companies in Korea. However, there has been no evaluation study for the accuracy and usefulness of these services. We aimed to compare two genetic testing services popular in Korea with 23andMe service in the United States.

Changes in osteoblastic activity in patient who received bortezomib as second line treatment for plasma cell myeloma: a prospective multicenter study.

We conducted a prospective multicenter study identifying the role of bortezomib in patients with relapsed or refractory plasma cell myeloma (PCM) in bone resorption and formation via bone turnover markers. A total of 104 patients received at least 1 cycle of bortezomib. Most of them had advanced disease (n = 89).

Risk factors for Opisthorchis viverrini and minute intestinal fluke infections in Lao PDR, 2009-2011.

The purpose of this report is to compare the prevalence of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal fluke (Ov/MIF) in Lao People's Democratic Republic according to different regions and evaluate the effect of ingestion of raw freshwater fish on the infection. Demographic data, behavioral data, and symptoms were obtained, and the Kato-Katz method was used for the diagnosis of Ov/MIF. In total, 3,046 individuals were enrolled.

Enhanced infrared neural stimulation using localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanorods.

An advanced optical activation of neural tissues is demonstrated using pulsed infrared light and plasmonic gold nanorods. Photothermal effect localized in plasma membrane triggers action potentials of in vivo neural tissues. Compared with conventional infrared stimulation, the suggested method can increase a neural responsivity and lower a threshold stimulation level significantly, thereby reducing a requisite radiant exposure and the concern of tissue damage.

A wireless power transmission system for implantable devices in freely moving rodents.

Reliable wireless power delivery for implantable devices in animals is highly desired for safe and effective experimental use. Batteries require frequent replacement; wired connections are inconvenient and unsafe, and short-distance inductive coupling requires the attachment of an exterior transmitter to the animal's body. In this article, we propose a solution by which animals with implantable devices can move freely without attachments.

Bone marrow plasma cell assessment before peripheral blood stem cell mobilization in patients with multiple myeloma undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation.

The current definition of complete response (CR) in multiple myeloma (MM) includes negative serum and urine immunofixation (IFE) tests and <5% bone marrow plasma cells (BMPCs). However, many studies of the prognostic impact of pretransplant response have not included BMPCs. We evaluated the prognostic impact of BMPC assessment before peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) mobilization on subsequent transplant outcomes.

Several reports on taeniasis and cysticercosis in Vietnam show that they are distributed in over 50 of 63 provinces. In some endemic areas, the prevalence of taeniasis was 0.2-12.

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging features of renal cell carcinoma and pulmonary metastases in a dog.

A 9-year-old spayed female cocker spaniel dog was referred for hematuria. A large abdominal mass and multiple pulmonary nodules were identified radiographically. A whole-body 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan revealed intensely increased uptake in a renal mass and the pulmonary nodules.

P21 and CD166 as predictive markers of poor response and outcome after fluorouracil-based chemoradiotherapy for the patients with rectal cancer.

Background: Pre-operative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is the standard treatment in clinical stage T3/4 or node positive rectal cancer. However, there are no established biomarkers that can predict the pathological response and clinical outcome to CRT.

Methods: Immunohistochemical staining was performed in tissue arrays constructed from core tissue specimens taken before treatment and from operative specimens from 112 patients who received 5-FU based pre-operative CRT and surgery.

Doppler ultrasonographic evaluation of renal arterial resistive and pulsatility indices in overhydrated Beagles.

Objective: To determine renal arterial resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) and clinical signs of overhydration induced by IV administration of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution and to assess RI and PI as variables for monitoring of dogs to detect overhydration.

Animals: 10 clinically normal Beagles.

Multi-color fluorescence imaging based on plasmonic wavelength selection and double illumination by white light.

We demonstrate the proof-of-concept for developing a multi-color fluorescence imaging system based on plasmonic wavelength selection and double illumination by white light source. This technique is associated with fluorescence excitation by transmitted light via a diffraction of propagating surface plasmons. Since double illumination through both sides of isosceles triangle prism in the Kretschmann configuration enables multiple transmission beams of different wavelengths to interact with the specimen, our approach can be an alternative to conventional fluorescence detection owing to alignment stability and functional expandability.
