Introduction: The selection of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke in the elderly remains challenging due to the underrepresentation of these patients in landmark randomized trials. The aim of this study was to assess the association between age and the pre-stroke modified Rankin scale score with functional outcomes after EVT in elderly patients aged ≥80 years.

Methods: We prospectively collected data from consecutive elderly patients who underwent EVT of the anterior or posterior circulation at our institution between 2007 and 2022.

Background And Aim: The thrombectomy in the elderly prediction score (TERPS) for functional outcome after anterior circulation endovascular therapy (EVT) in patients ≥ 80 years was recently developed. The aim of this study was to assess predictors of functional outcome in the elderly and validate the prediction model.

Methods: Consecutive patients treated with EVT from the Oslo Acute Reperfusion Stroke Study were evaluated for inclusion.

One of the greatest challenges in orbital reconstruction is to obtain adequate orbital volume and globe projection after traumatic injury. Autologous bone graft has been considered the gold standard for orbital floor reconstruction, but the harvesting yields many possible complications, such as donor site morbidity. Bone resorption is a frequent problem that can lead to insufficient volume after graft placement.

Background And Aims: Whereas high-level evidence has been proven for safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment (EVT) in large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, the evidence for EVT in medium vessel occlusion (MeVO) in both sexes and different age groupremains to be answered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of clinical and technical parameters, focusing on sex, age and EVT procedural factors, on functional outcome in primary MeVO (pMeVO) strokes.

Methods: 144 patients with pMeVO in the MCA territory from the Oslo Acute Reperfusion Stroke Study (OSCAR) were included.

Article Synopsis
  • Mass casualty incidents (MCI), especially those involving children, are rare but complex situations that require thorough preparation and specialized emergency protocols.
  • Medical personnel must quickly and efficiently assess and prioritize patients based on their medical needs when responding to an MCI.
  • The report introduces a new training program for pediatric emergency providers that emphasizes the JumpSTART triage algorithm to enhance their skills in managing secondary triage during these critical incidents.

Controlled release formulations of Ruta essential oil obtained by ionic gelation were developed. The presence of rue essential oil in the alginate and chitosan capsules was evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Release studies revealed that in acidic conditions (pH 4.

Spinal cord infarctions are rare, and the symptoms vary depending on location and size. One patient presented with severe neck pain and paresis of the left arm. Compression of a cervical nerve root was initially suspected, but the progression of symptoms and MRI findings gradually suggested a different aetiology.

Background: The endovascular treatment procedure in tandem occlusions (TO) is complex compared to single occlusion (SO) and optimal management remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to identify clinical and procedural factors that may be associated to efficacy and safety in the management of TO and compare functional outcome in TO and SO stroke patients.

Methods: This is a retrospective single center study of medium (MeVO) and large vessel occlusion (LVO) of the anterior circulation.

Mechanical thrombectomy is now the standard treatment for acute ischaemic stroke with occlusion of a carotid or intercranial artery. With occlusions of this type, thrombolytic treatment often has limited effect. The therapeutic outcome with the use of thrombectomy is time-dependent, and a personalised approach to indication is always necessary.

Background: Nondisplaced metaphyseal fractures of the distal tibia, or toddler's fractures, are one of the most common pediatric injuries. Healing typically occurs quickly without sequelae. Treatment ranges from long leg cast immobilization to observation.

The goal of vaccinating large numbers of staff and nonstaff against COVID-19 with a novel vaccine necessitated rapid modifications to an existing workforce vaccination program. We performed a series of 3 iterative systems-focused simulations and debriefings in the span of 1 week to evaluate existing vaccination clinic space, trial a new physical space for the COVID-19 vaccine clinic, identify existing process gaps, and determine necessary changes for maximum efficiency and safety. By using iterative systems-focused simulations, we were able to perform a gap analysis on the existing program, develop and stabilize new processes, and focus on emergency preparedness.

Article Synopsis
  • This research looks at how bilingual children switch between two languages while they talk, focusing on kids from San Diego and Montreal.
  • The study found that kids switched languages more often when moving between sentences rather than within a sentence, and they used more important words (like nouns) instead of little words (like 'the' or 'is').
  • The reasons why kids switched languages were different: for Spanish-English kids, it depended more on how much they heard Spanish, while for French-English kids, it depended more on how well they knew French.

Background: There is emerging evidence of an increased risk of venous thromboembolism as well as several reports of cerebral venous thrombosis in COVID-19.

Case Presentation: A previously healthy man in his fifties was admitted due to sudden confusion and reduced consciousness. One month earlier the patient had symptoms with headache, fever, dry cough, vomiting and diarrhoea and reduced sense of taste and smell.

In the midst of a global pandemic, hospitals around the world are working to meet the demand for patients ill with the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China. As the crisis unfolds, several countries have reported lower numbers as well as less morbidity and mortality for pediatric patients. Thus, pediatric centers find themselves pivoting from preparing for a patient surge to finding ways to support the regional response for adults.

Washington was the first US state to have a patient test positive for COVID-19. Before this, our children's hospital proactively implemented an incident command structure that allowed for collaborative creation of safety measures, policies, and procedures for patients, families, staff, and providers. Although the treatment and protective standards are continuously evolving, this commentary shares our thoughts on how an institution, and specifically, surgical services, may develop collaborative process improvement to accommodate for rapid and ongoing change.

Study Objective: Patient handoffs at shift change in the emergency department (ED) are a well-known risk point for patient safety. Numerous methods have been implemented and studied to improve the quality of handoffs to mitigate this risk. However, few have investigated processes designed to decrease the number of handoffs.

A wide variety of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) with semi-volatile properties are emitted to indoor air and, thus, humans might get exposed to these compounds. Pet cats spend the major part of their lifetime at home and might integrate indoor contamination so that they could mirror the human exposure. Three classes of EDCs, polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and phthalates (PAEs), were simultaneously considered and quantified in the serum of cats (Felis silvestris catus) living in the Paris area (France).

Acinetobacter sp. strain A47, which has been recovered from several soft tissue samples from a patient undergoing reconstructive surgery due to a traumatic amputation, was categorized as a taxonomically unique bacterial strain. The molecular analysis based on three housekeeping protein-coding genes (16S rRNA, rpoB, and gyrB) showed that strain A47 does not belong to any of the hitherto known taxa and may represent a previously undescribed Acinetobacter species.

Introduction: The Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) is a rapid evaluation tool that establishes a child's clinical status and his or her category of illness to direct initial management priorities. Recently the PAT has been incorporated widely into the pediatric resuscitation curriculum. Although intuitive, its performance characteristics have yet to be quantified.

A 5-month-old previously healthy girl presented to the emergency department with a large palpable nontender mass in the hypothenar soft tissues of her left hand. US revealed a well-demarcated nonvascular soft tissue mass. Subsequent MR imaging showed a rim-enhancing mass with heterogeneous intrinsic signal characteristics.
