In this paper, we propose a novel approach for efficient training of deep neural networks in a bottom-up fashion using a layered structure. Our algorithm, which we refer to as deep cascade learning, is motivated by the cascade correlation approach of Fahlman and Lebiere, who introduced it in the context of perceptrons. We demonstrate our algorithm on networks of convolutional layers, though its applicability is more general.

Introduction: Patients with influenza A (H1N1)v infection have developed rapidly progressive lower respiratory tract disease resulting in respiratory failure. We describe the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of the first 32 persons reported to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to influenza A (H1N1)v infection in Spain.

Methods: We used medical chart reviews to collect data on ICU adult patients reported in a standardized form.

We present the case of a 24 year old man who suffered from severe chronic esophagitis and an esophageal stricture. He was managed by gastric pull-up but complicated by leakage of the anastomosis. Subsequent sophageasurgical treatment with free jejunal graft was performed and the rationale for the technique selected is discussed.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the nutritional quality and acceptability of a meat product formulated with mechanically deboned poultry meat (40%), bovine plasma (40%) and bovine red cells (3%) as major ingredients. Proteins, fat, humidity and ash were determined by AOAC procedure, iron and calcium by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and essential amino acids by HPLC. Biological evaluation was performed using digestibility and PER procedures.
