High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is an independent protective factor against cardiovascular disease. The enzyme paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) contributes to the anti-atherogenic effects of HDL. In vitro studies have demonstrated that paraoxonase's substrates are highly heterogeneous and that some contribute to the development of atherosclerotic lesions.
