Article Synopsis
  • A study was done to see if a type of screening test called FIT was better than the usual procedure, colonoscopy, for first-degree relatives of people with colorectal cancer.
  • The researchers wanted to know if more people would agree to take the FIT test compared to colonoscopy and if both tests would find the same number of serious issues.
  • The study was planned to involve many people over several years but had to stop early because it wasn't looking like it would have good results, even though they still gathered data for two years after.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate how different targeted therapies and other factors impact COVID-19 hospitalisation risk in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases.
  • A cohort of 7,782 patients was analyzed, revealing that while most targeted therapies weren't linked to increased hospitalisation risk, TNF inhibitors significantly lowered it, while rituximab appeared to increase risk.
  • Key demographics and comorbidities, alongside COVID-19 symptoms, also influenced hospitalisation likelihood, indicating that multiple factors play a role in patient outcomes.

The better understanding of the safety of biologic DMARDs (bDMARDs), as well as the emergence of new bDMARDs against different therapeutic targets and biosimilars have likely influenced the use patterns of these compounds over time. The aim of this study is to assess changes in demographic characteristics, disease activity and treatment patterns in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), or ankylosing spondylitis (AS) who started a first- or second-line biologic between 2007 and mid-2020. Patients diagnosed with RA, PsA or AS included in the BIOBADASER registry from January 2007 to July 2020 were included.

The use of vitamin D (VitD) supplements has become widespread in the last decade due not only to the dissociation between the blood levels recommended as "optimal" and those shown by the healthy population but also to its presumed beneficial effects on multiple disorders. This work evaluated the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in a healthy population of European origin living in a region with high solar irradiation. In serum samples from a population-based study conducted in the Canary Islands, levels of 25(OH)D were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the lung's diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (Dlco) changes over time in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and identifies factors that might affect this change, particularly focusing on sex differences.
  • Results showed that COPD patients experience a more significant decline in Dlco compared to those without COPD, with an average yearly drop of 1.34% in COPD patients versus only 0.04% in controls.
  • Women with COPD exhibited lower initial Dlco values and a steeper annual decline compared to men, indicating that sex may play a crucial role in how lung function deteriorates in these patients.
