Purpose Of Review: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is an infectious disease that presents clinically in only a small percentage of individuals despite almost universal infection with the causative agent. Here, we review the latest concepts in the clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response of this disease.
Recent Findings: Several recently published papers/reviews describe IM as a condition caused by one of several etiologic agents including, cytomegalovirus (HHV-5), Roseola virus (HHV-6) and Toxoplasmosis amongst others; this review focuses on IM as solely caused by the human herpes virus 4 (HHV-4).
EBV is the sole causative agent of the acute illness in humans described either as infectious mononucleosis (IM), or glandular fever. IM, when not clinically silent, can present in patients with at least two of the classic triad of symptoms of fever, pharyngitis, and lymphadenopathy. Challenges for the clinician arise when atypical cases present.

Analysis of the molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that anions induced unfolding of the alpha2 and alpha1 helices at the carboxyl ends which are located on the opposite ends of the alpha-helix core. Data obtained in vitro established the validity of this concept, showed the specificities of the Hecate-betaCG, and Phor14 and Phor21-betaCG conjugates in killing cells that express functional LH/CG receptors and proved that the LH/CG receptor capacity is directly related to the compound's specificity. In in vivo experiments, Hecate-betaCG, Phor14-betaCG, and Phor21-betaCG(ala) each caused highly significant reductions of tumor volume and tumor burden in nude mice bearing breast cancer xenografts; Hecate and Phor21 alone or conjugated with non-specific peptides were not effective.

In series of experiments conducted in vitro, we have established the concept that conjugates of the lytic peptides Hecate or Phor14 with a fragment of the beta chain of LH (amino acids 80-94) selectively destroy both androgen sensitive and insensitive human prostate cancer cells. Extraction of steroids from the culture medium by charcoal reduced the ability of the conjugates to kill LNCaP, BRF41T and PC-3 cells. Addition of hormones known to up-regulate LH receptors (estradiol, testosterone or FSH) to the culture medium restored the ability of the conjugates to kill these cell lines.

Since these xenografts also express LHRH receptors, we prepared a LHRH-hecate conjugate and tested its ability to destroy PC-3 cells in vitro and in vivo.
Materials And Methods: LHRH-hecate was added to cultures of PC-3, BRF 41 T, DU145, and LNCaP cells in the presence and absence of steroids.
We describe a 19-year-old girl who has clinical features of microphthalmia with linear skin defects (MLS) syndrome caused by a microdeletion of Xp22.3. In addition to the classical ocular abnormalities and linear skin defects she has other features not previously described.
