Background: Pyogenic Liver Abscesses (PLA) are the most common type of visceral abscess. They generally develop in a context of biliary disease or hematogenous seeding, but a complete diagnostic work-up is always required in order not to miss other important causes, including above all malignancies of the gastro-intestinal tract.

Article Synopsis
  • HIV-HCV co-infected patients, once considered difficult to treat, showed high success rates (98.4% SVR12) with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for HCV treatment.
  • The study included 201 patients, mostly males with a median age of 54, and reported minimal side effects like pruritus, headache, and fatigue.
  • Six months after DAA treatment, there was a notable increase in CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts, particularly in patients who started with low CD4+ levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how variations in KIR genes and their interactions with HLA Class I ligands affect the severity of COVID-19 in 396 Sardinian patients.
  • Researchers divided patients into two groups: symptomatic or mildly symptomatic (Group A) and hospitalized patients with severe disease (Group S).
  • Findings showed significant genetic differences, with Group S having a higher frequency of the KIR A/A haplotype and less representation of the KIR2DS2/HLA C1 combination, indicating these factors may correlate with more severe disease outcomes.
