Background Context: Although autogenous iliac crest bone graft (AICBG) is considered the gold-standard graft material for spinal fusion, new bone substitutes are being developed to avoid associated complications and disadvantages. By combining autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) expanded ex vivo and allogenic cancellous bone graft, we obtain a tissue-engineered product that is osteoconductive and potentially more osteogenic and osteoinductive than AICBG, owing to the higher concentration of MSCs.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of implanting a tissue-engineered product consisting of expanded bone marrow MSCs loaded onto allograft bone (MSC+allograft) for spinal fusion in degenerative spine disease, as well as to assess its clinical and radiological efficacy.

Primary synovial chondromatosis is a proliferation of cartilaginous bodies within the synovial membrane, tendon sheath or bursa. It is a rare orthopaedic entity especially when it occurs in the distal radioulnar joint. We report a 27-year-old man with recurrent synovial chondromatosis, nine years after his first operation.

Melorheostosis is a rare non-hereditary bone disease characterized by a radiographic pattern of flowing hyperostosis along the cortex with sclerotomal distribution. We report a case of a patient with severe knee contracture and a restricted range of motion caused by intraarticular bone fragment and hyperostotic bone lesions secondary to melorheostosis. An arthroscopically assisted approach was used successfully in order to remove free bone fragments and to release the hyperostotic lesions in the bone cortex of the distal femur.

A series of polymer and copolymer networks with varying hydrophilicity and distribution of the hydrophilic groups was synthesized and biologically tested with monolayer culture of human chondrocytes in vitro. Cell viability (MTT), proliferation (BrdU incorporation) and aggrecan expression (PG ELISA) were quantified at 7 and 14 days from seeding. Both assays (MTT and BrdU) showed complementary results that are consistent with positive cellular adhesion on the material.

From 1995 to 2000, 21 patients (14 women and 7 men) with a mean age of 42 were treated with excision of the pisiform for a dysfunction of the pisotriquetral joint. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 36 months (average: 30 months). The diagnoses included degenerative arthritis of the pisotriquetral joint (15 patients), degenerative arthritis associated with a ganglion (3 patients), and calcifications caused by flexor carpi ulnaris tendinopathy (3 patients).
