Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at patients with diverticular disease (DD) and how their bowel movements, like constipation and diarrhea, relate to the seriousness of their condition.
  • Researchers measured the severity using different tools and checked how changes in bowel habits might predict future health problems.
  • They found that people with worse constipation or diarrhea had more severe DD and were more likely to develop a serious illness called acute diverticulitis over three years.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during ventral hernia repair using Lázaro da Silva's technique to prevent complications like hypertension.
  • IAP was measured at four key points during the surgery on 28 patients, finding a slight increase of 0.5 mmHg.
  • Ultimately, the procedure was effective as the increase in IAP did not lead to significant issues such as intra-abdominal hypertension or compartment syndrome.

•The study investigated the prevalence of certain comorbidities in patients with Chagas megaoesophagus compared to those without the condition, aiming to determine whether it serves as a protective or risk factor. •In the general group (546 patients), the three most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (44.3%), dyslipidaemia (17.

Background And Aims: The Diverticular Inflammation and Complication Assessment (DICA) classification and the Combined Overview on Diverticular Assessment (CODA) were found to be effective in predicting the outcomes of Diverticular Disease (DD). We ascertain whether fecal calprotectin (FC) can further aid in improving risk stratification.

Methods: A three-year international, multicentre, prospective cohort study was conducted involving 43 Gastroenterology and Endoscopy centres.

This study evaluated four biomarkers of inflammation or fibrosis as progression indicators for heart disease in patients with Chagas disease. We compared values of these markers at the time of the first sample collection of blood (first time point) and at the time of the last collection of blood (second time point) for 103 individuals positive for Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies. They were split into two clinical groups: 52 individuals with the indeterminate form of the disease at the first time point and 51 controls that already had either cardiac involvement (N = 25) or megaviscera (megaesophagus and/or megacolon; N = 26) at that time.

Article Synopsis
  • Inhibitors of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) can help treat metastatic colorectal cancer without KRAS or NRAS mutations, but testing for these mutations is costly and not widely available.
  • The study analyzed 139 colorectal cancer patients to see if EGFR expression through immunohistochemistry could serve as a cheaper way to predict RAS mutation status.
  • Results showed a strong association between EGFR expression levels and RAS mutation status, achieving 86.1% accuracy in identifying mutations, thus suggesting that EGFR expression can be a useful diagnostic tool.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi that causes chronic cardiac and digestive dysfunction. Megacolon, an irreversible dilation of the left colon, is the main feature of the gastrointestinal form of Chagas disease. Patients have severe constipation, a consequence of enteric neuron degeneration associated with chronic inflammation.

Background: Vitamin D (VD) has an important role in regulating gut mucosal immunity, and seems to be inversely linked to disease activity and more frequent relapses in inflammatory bowel disease. In this study, we evaluated patients with Crohn's disease (CD) treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in association with VD.

Methods: A double-blind, randomized, prospective study was conducted.

In this session different issues for the surgical management of diverticular disease DD) were considered. The first session debated about the antibiotic treatment for acute uncomplicated diverticulitis (AUD), and supports their use selectively rather than routinely in patients with AUD. The second session discussed the best surgical treatment for those patients.

Background: An increased number of congenital Zika virus infections with neurological and musculoskeletal malformations have been diagnosed worldwide, however, there are still several gaps in the knowledge about this infection, its associated mechanism, timing of transmission, and description of throughout findings of signs and symptoms, which is described in this paper. The purpose of this study is to describe aspects of congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) beyond the central nervous system comprising detailed delineation of all the other clinical findings.

Methods: A retrospective research developed using electronic medical records.

Background: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease that affects 1%-3% of Caucasian populations and may be persistent, disfiguring and stigmatising. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are potent blockers of gastric acid secretion. They are widely regarded as the agents of choice for the treatment of acid-peptic disorders.

Purpose: To analyze the resistance to medial traction of abdominal wall muscles, before and after performing relaxing incisions.

Methods: Seventeen live pigs were used. After a median laparotomy, the handles were made in the rectus abdominis muscles (RAM) to fit the dynamometer.

Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and remains one of the most neglected diseases in Latin America. One of its clinical forms is Chagas megacolon. Despite being known for more than half a century, detailed causes are still obscure.

Background: Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) infects millions of Latin Americans each year and can induce chagasic megacolon. Little is known about how serotonin (5-HT) modulates this condition.

Chagas disease is an infection caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi that affects millions of people worldwide and is endemic in Latin America. Megacolon is the most frequent complication of the digestive chronic form and happens due to lesions of the enteric nervous system. The neuronal lesions seem to initiate in the acute phase and persist during the chronic phase, albeit the mechanisms involved in this process are still debated.

Background: Constipation is the main symptom of acquired chagasic megacolon. However, a number of patients with Chagas disease without colon involvement also have the same complain. This study evaluated the role of small bowel in constipated patients with Chagas disease with and without megacolon.

Patients suffering from chagasic megacolon must have an intact mucosal barrier as they survive this chronic disease for decades. A key structure of the mucosal barrier are epithelial cells. Vasoactive-intestinal-peptide (VIP)-positive nerve fibres are involved in influencing, e.

Recent studies have shown that patterns of colocalisation of hormones in enteroendocrine cells are more complex than previously appreciated and that the patterns differ substantially between species. In this study, the human sigmoid colon is investigated by immunohistochemistry for the presence of gastrointestinal hormones and their colocalisation. The segments of colon were distant from the pathology that led to colectomy and appeared structurally normal.

Surgical treatment of diverticulitis is still characterized by high morbidity and mortality. Surgical approach evolved from the early 20th century with 3-stage laparotomy to colon resection with primary anastomosis. In the last 2 decades, laparoscopic colectomy has been applied to elective and emergency setting of diverticular disease.

Diverticular disease is a very common entity affecting the elders, but also a few people in the young age group. Most patients are asymptomatic, but about 30% of them will have abdominal complaints. As the pathophysiology of diverticular disease has changed since its description, we address some important points about the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • The DICA classification helps evaluate patients with diverticulosis and diverticular disease by predicting the risk of diverticulitis and potential need for surgery.
  • In a study of 1651 patients, it was found that higher DICA severity correlated with increased rates of diverticulitis recurrence and surgical intervention.
  • Therapy, particularly mesalazine-based treatments, showed effectiveness in preventing diverticulitis in certain DICA classifications, specifically DICA 2 patients.
