In situ assay of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase in Thiobacillus neapolitanus.

Cells permeabilized with chloroform yielded ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) activities nearly equal to those of cell extracts, thus indicating that both cytoplasmic and carboxysomal RuBisCO are functional in situ. The carboxysomal and cytoplasmic RuBisCO both form the CO2-Mg2(+)-enzyme ternary complex, as evidenced by stabilization with 2-C-carboxy-D-arabinitol-1,5-bisphosphate (CABP), a potent competitive inhibitor of RuBisCO. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the carboxysome is functional in carbon dioxide fixation.

Neuropsychological skills with motor dysfunctional and motor normal children.

A group of 40 children was selected from a larger sample based on their performance on motor coordination, motor speed, and motor inhibition tasks. Twenty of the children were classified as Motor Dysfunctional (MD) and 20 were classified as Motor Normal (MN). The groups were compared on several neuropsychological measures.

Detection of periodontal disease activity with a scintillation camera.

The goal of this study was to assess the ability of a scintillation camera method to detect areas of active bone loss due to periodontitis. Technetium 99m methylene diphosphonate was used as the bone-seeking radiopharmaceutical. Bone-seeking radiopharmaceutical uptake (BSRU) was imaged and quantified in alveolar bone regions of interest with a scintillation camera and a computer.

Immunotherapy, with interleukin-2 (IL-2) or IL-2 plus lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells, has been used to treat cancer and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in man. Similarities between feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection in the cat and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in man have prompted immunotherapeutic studies in the cat. Lymphocyte population changes in cats naturally infected with feline immunodeficiency virus.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is associated with feline acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (FAIDS) and has been suggested as a model for HIV-induced human AIDS. The most obvious immunological defect in HIV infection is a reduction in CD4+ cell numbers and an inversion of the CD4:CD8 ratio. To determine whether the same is true in FIV infection, we analyzed by flow cytometry using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to feline lymphocyte populations the CD4:CD8 ratios in cats naturally infected with the virus.

Cerebral abnormalities in cocaine abusers: demonstration by SPECT perfusion brain scintigraphy. Work in progress.

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) perfusion brain scans with iodine-123 isopropyl iodoamphetamine (IMP) were obtained in 12 subjects who acknowledged using cocaine on a sporadic to a daily basis. The route of cocaine administration varied from nasal to intravenous. Concurrent abuse of other drugs was also reported.

Treatment of glaucoma by use of transscleral neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser cyclocoagulation in dogs.

Neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser energy was transsclerally applied to the ciliary body of 56 eyes of 37 dogs for treatment of glaucoma. Forty-four eyes were glucomatous at the time of treatment, and 12 normotensive eyes with ciliary cleft closure were treated prophylactically. Glaucoma was primary in 35 dogs and secondary in 2 dogs (1 eye in each dog).

Iron status of Australian children.

A national survey covering all States and Territories was conducted in urban and rural schools to determine the iron status of Australian children and adolescents. This article reports the results of blood analyses for 1696 schoolchildren aged 9, 12 and 15 years. The measures of iron status analysed were plasma levels of iron, transferrin and ferritin.

Success rates of unilateral vs. bilateral cataract extraction in dogs.

Postoperative results of 113 unilateral and 77 bilateral extracapsular cataract extractions (EC-CEs) in dogs were evaluated retrospectively. Restoration or improvement of functional vision was achieved in 79.6% of the eyes in dogs with unilateral extraction and 85.

Myocardial clearance of Tc-99m hexakis-2-methoxy-2-methylpropyl isonitrile (MIBI) in patients with coronary artery disease.

Myocardial clearance of the new cationic, lypophilic myocardial perfusion agent, Tc-99m-hexakis-2-methoxy-2-methylpropyl isonitrile (MIBI) was studied in nine patients with coronary artery disease. Regional time-activity curves were determined from serial postexercise myocardial SPECT images after a single dose of Tc-99m MIBI. There were significant differences between the clearance rates from normal and ischemic myocardium.

Iofetamine I 123 single photon emission computed tomography is accurate in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

To determine the diagnostic accuracy of iofetamine hydrochloride I 123 (IMP) with single photon emission computed tomography in Alzheimer's disease, we studied 58 patients with AD and 15 age-matched healthy control subjects. We used a qualitative method to assess regional IMP uptake in the entire brain and to rate image data sets as normal or abnormal without knowledge of subjects'clinical classification. The sensitivity and specificity of IMP with single photon emission computed tomography in AD were 88% and 87%, respectively.

Carbon dioxide laser ablation for treatment of limbal squamous cell carcinoma in horses.

Limbal squamous cell carcinoma in 4 horses was treated successfully, using carbon dioxide laser ablation. Tumors were removed, with minimal to no postoperative inflammation or discomfort to the horses. Carbon dioxide laser ablation represents a promising new option in the treatment of limbal squamous cell carcinoma in horses.

The changing pattern of chronic lung disease of prematurity.

Thirty four infants with chronic lung disease of prematurity were reviewed and divided into two groups on the appearance of the chest radiograph. Type 1 disease (n = 19) was defined as homogeneous or patchy ill defined opacification in the lungs without coarse reticulation, and type 2 disease (n = 11) had the classical appearance of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Four patients could not be classified.

Osteosarcoma--presumed lymph node metastases in two cases.

Two patients with osteosarcoma of a lower limb and presumed lymph node metastases are described. The metastases presented in both children as palpable masses, one in the inguinal region and the other in the pelvis. One was visible on plain radiography; both were demonstrated on computed tomography and bone scintigraphy.

Five patients with Rasmussen's syndrome investigated by single-photon-emission computed tomography.

Five patients with Rasmussen's syndrome (sometimes known as smouldering encephalitis), are presented. This rare form of childhood epilepsy is characterized by intractable partial seizures with progressive neurological and mental impairment. Diagnostic brain biopsy shows the histological changes of active encephalitis, consistent with a viral infection.

Increased iofetamine I 123 brain uptake in metastatic melanoma.

Four of five patients with brain metastases from melanoma had increased lofetamine I 123 uptake in the region of the tumor deposits. A comparison group of five patients with melanoma with no clinical or radiologic evidence of brain involvement and 46 of 47 patients without malignant melanoma but with known brain tumors of other histologic types had normal or decreased iofetamine I 123 brain uptake in the region of the tumor. An exception was one patient whose metastatic small cell lung cancer to the brain showed focally increased uptake.

Viral encephalitis: imaging with SPECT.

SPECT brain imaging performed in two patients with presumed herpes encephalitis demonstrated greater sensitivity and more precise localization than either planar brain imaging or CT scanning.

Decreased iodine-123 IMP caudate nucleus uptake in patients with Huntington's disease.

To determine whether I-123 isopropyl iodoamphetamine (IMP) uptake is reduced in the basal ganglia of patients with Huntington's disease compared with that in aged-matched normal and abnormal control subjects, a caudate ratio was defined that compared the average separation (in pixel units) between the midline and the left and right caudate heads to the width of the brain as measured on transaxial cross-sections of I-123 IMP SPECT brain images. For six patients with Huntington's disease, the average caudate ratio was 29.0% (SD +/- 2.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and myelofibrosis in a dog.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and myelofibrosis were diagnosed concurrently in a 10-year-old neutered female Brittany Spaniel. Documentation of gastric ulceration, hypergastrinemia, and gastrin-secreting islet cell tumor with splenic metastases facilitated the diagnosis of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Patchy long-bone medullary sclerosis, nonregenerative anemia and thrombocytopenia, multiple acellular bone marrow aspirates, marked splenic extramedullary hematopoiesis, and acellular core bone marrow biopsy with areas of necrosis and fibrosis supported the diagnosis of myelofibrosis.

Diffraction patterns in the shadows of disks and obstacles.

We compare the Fresnel diffraction pattern of a thin circular disk with that of a square obstacle, specifically evaluating the on-axis field strength. Photographs of the diffraction patterns reveal some curious features for the square obstacle. Second, the precise electric and magnetic fields behind a conducting circular disk are evaluated without invoking the Fresnel approximation and contrasted with the rigorous electromagnetic result for a metal sphere.

Single photon emission computed tomography in Alzheimer's disease. Abnormal iofetamine I 123 uptake reflects dementia severity.

To determine whether abnormalities in regional cerebral functional activity estimated by iofetamine hydrochloride I 123 and single photon emission computed tomography can be detected in mild or moderate as well as severe cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD), we performed iofetamine I 123-single photon emission computed tomography in 37 patients with probable AD (nine patients with mild, 18 patients with moderate, and ten patients with severe dementia) and nine age-matched control subjects. Iofetamine I 123 uptake was measured in right and left frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital cortices. Mean (right and left) iofetamine I 123 activity was lowest in the parietal region of patients with AD and was significantly reduced in the other three regions compared with control subjects.
