Higher concentrations of ambient air pollutants, including PM and NO, and other pollutants have been found near active oil and gas wells and may be associated with adverse COVID-19 outcomes. We assessed whether residential exposure to nearby oil and gas production was associated with higher rates of the respiratory infection COVID-19 and related mortality using a population-based ecological study in California. Using gridded population estimates, we estimated area-level exposure to annual average oil and gas production volume from active wells within 1 kilometer (km) of populated areas within census block groups from 2018 to 2020.

Background: Endogenous and exogenous hormones may be present in beef. Human consumption of hormones has been linked to adverse health effects.
Objective: To estimate daily intake of hormonal growth promotants (HGP) from beef consumed by the US population.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent chemicals of increasing concern to human health. PFAS contamination in water systems has been linked to a variety of sources including hydrocarbon fire suppression activities, industrial and military land uses, agricultural applications of biosolids, and consumer products. To assess PFAS in California tap water, we collected 60 water samples from inside homes in four different geographic regions, both urban and rural.

Objectives: This cohort was established through a community-academic partnership with the goal of assessing the health effects of childhood exposures to wind-blown particulate matter (PM) and inform public health action. We hypothesize that local PM sources are related to poorer children's respiratory health.
Stereotactic radiosurgery is an established focal treatment for brain metastases with high local control rates. An important side-effect of stereotactic radiosurgery is the development of radionecrosis. On conventional MR imaging, radionecrosis and tumour progression often have similar appearances, but have contrasting management approaches.

This retrospective study was conducted on combat-exposed military service members who were admitted to an inpatient residential treatment program for evaluation of fitness to serve and treatment of trauma related conditions. The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) was used to screen for PTSD, determine symptom severity, and monitor symptom change.

We examined 3.1 million SARS-CoV-2 infections and 49,691 COVID-19 deaths that occurred in California from February 2020 to February 2021 to evaluate risks associated with long-term neighborhood concentrations of particulate matter less than 2.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included adults with histology-proven glioblastoma who underwent an index DSC MRP examination following treatment. Each index examination was evaluated by three reporters independently, including qualitative assessment and measurement of mean regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) ratios.

Although caused by different pathogens, COVID-19 and influenza share many clinical features, as well as the potential for inflammatory, cardiovascular, and other long-term complications. During the 2020-2021 influenza season, COVID-19 mitigation efforts and a robust influenza vaccination campaign led to an unprecedented reduction in influenza cases. The lack of exposure to influenza, along with antigenic changes, may have reduced population immunity to influenza and set the stage for a high severity influenza season in 2021-2022.

After the devastating wildfire that destroyed most of the town of Paradise, California in 2018, volatile organic compounds were found in water distribution pipes. Approximately 11 months after the fire, we collected tap water samples from 136 homes that were still standing and tested for over 100 chemicals. Each participant received a customized report showing the laboratory findings from their sample.

We wished to explore the predictive role of basic demographics to establish a simple tool that could help risk stratify healthcare workers.

We performed spatial analysis of over 5000 water samples collected over a 17 month period by a local water utility, sampled tap water for VOCs in approximately 10% ( = 136) of standing homes, and conducted additional nontargeted chemical analysis of 10 samples. Benzene contamination was present in 29% of service connections to destroyed structures and 2% of service connections to standing homes.

Bold decisions were made to order vaccines early, before we knew if they would be effective, and to vary from the manufacturers' recommendations by extending the 'prime-boost' interval between the first and second doses of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. These decisions were controversial at the time but have contributed enormously to the effectiveness of the vaccination programme.

Here, we report immediate impacts of changes in human activities on wildlife and environmental threats during the early lockdown months of 2020, based on 877 qualitative reports and 332 quantitative assessments from 89 different studies. Hundreds of reports of unusual species observations from around the world suggest that animals quickly responded to the reductions in human presence.

Understanding the habitat and environmental drivers that lead to areas of high biomass, or 'hotspots', and their seasonal persistence, will support the identification of important foraging regions for mid- and upper- trophic level predators. We quantify the distribution of hotspots of the two dominant species of euphausiid in the north-east Pacific Ocean: Euphausia pacifica and Thysanoessa spinifera, as well as euphausiid larvae (mixed species).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAir monitoring networks developed by communities have potential to reduce exposures and affect environmental health policy, yet there have been few performance evaluations of networks of these sensors in the field. We developed a network of over 40 air sensors in Imperial County, CA, which is delivering real-time data to local communities on levels of particulate matter. We report here on the performance of the Network to date by comparing the low-cost sensor readings to regulatory monitors for 4 years of operation (2015-2018) on a network-wide basis.

In California's Imperial Valley, a collaborative of community members, researchers, and scientists developed a community air monitoring network to provide local residents with better air quality information. To expand the reach of the project and to prepare the next generation of youth leaders we developed an internship program to increase environmental health literacy and civic leadership.

Initiated in response to community concerns about high levels of air pollution and asthma, the Imperial County Community Air Monitoring Project was conducted as a collaboration between a community-based organization, a non-governmental environmental health program, and academic researchers. This community-engaged research project aimed to produce real-time, community-level air quality information through the establishment of a community air monitoring network (CAMN) of 40 low-cost particulate matter (PM) monitors in Imperial County, California. Methods used to involve the community partner organization and residents in the development, operation, and use of the CAMN included the following: (1) establishing equitable partnerships among the project collaborators; (2) forming a community steering committee to guide project activities; (3) engaging residents in data collection to determine monitor sites; (4) providing hands-on training to assemble and operate the air monitors; (5) conducting focus groups to guide display and dissemination of monitoring data; and (6) conducting trainings on community action planning.

To date, limited studies, if any, have been conducted to utilize low-cost sensor measurements to improve PM prediction with high spatiotemporal resolutions based on statistical models. Imperial County in California is an exemplary region with sparse Air Quality System (AQS) monitors and a community-operated low-cost network entitled Identifying Violations Affecting Neighborhoods (IVAN).
