Glycosylated hemoglobin was measured in Mystromys albicaudatus, a rodent model of diabetes mellitus, using a newly developed colorimetric assay. The mean glycosylated hemoglobin for non-diabetic Mystromys (n = 321) was 14.8 nmol hydroxymethylfurfural / 10 mg hemoglobin which is similar to that obtained in non-diabetic humans.

A technique for culturing small quantities of mammalian cells on modified microscope slides is described. The modified microscope slides were Bellco Glass, Inc., toxoplasmosis slides and the cell cultures used were early passage bovine embryonic lung cells and continuous cell lines of porcine and canine origins.

The Ortho ELT-8 is an automated blood counter which appears to be safe, precise and free from carry-over. Red and white cell results generally agree with those on the Coulter Counter, Model S, though discrepancies were noted with the WBC and PCV. Reference methods showed the Model S WBC results tended to be inaccurate on the discrepant samples though neither instrument was predominantly responsible for the PCV discrepancies.

Surveys of antiglobulin test procedures and reagents were undertaken in 1979-1980 as part of a national external quality assessment scheme in compatibility testing. An extraordinary lack of standardization was revealed. In addition, practices underwent considerable changes over this period.

An agent lethal to embryonated chicken eggs was isolated from lung tissues of a quarter horse mare with a fatal respiratory disease. The lesions induced in embryonated chicken eggs, the tinctoral properties, the ultrastructural morphology, the resistance of the organism to sodium sulfadiazine, and the presence of a chlamydial complement fixing antigen, identify this isolate as a member of the family Chlamydiaceae and suggest the agent to be Chlamydia psittaci. Two Shetland ponies experimentally infected with the isolated agent developed subclinical infection as demonstrated by an increase in complement fixing antibody titers.

Seven proficiency tests in compatibility testing were issued in 1979 to 1980. In each exercise participants were required to test five sera, most of which contained alloantibodies, against three samples of red cells by three designated techniques, namely agglutination in saline at room temperature, agglutination in albumin at 37 degrees C and the antiglobulin test at 37 degrees C. Comparability was achieved by scoring of results.

The frequency of symptomatic hypoglycemia was determined prospectively over an 18-mo period in 147 children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus. All patients were treated with two daily injections of insulin. The data were analyzed to determine the relationship between episodes of symptomatic hypoglycemia and blood glucose control as assessed by hemoglobin A1c measurements.

Previous observations that endogenous retroviral envelope antigen is expressed in splenic Ig(+) B cells of SRBC-sensitized 15I5 X 71 chickens suggested that expression of this antigen might be a general property of plasma cells in 15I5 and related strains. To investigate this possibility, immunofluorescence assays with antiviral sera were carried out using plasma cells present in Harder glands. Endogenous retroviral envelope antigen was detectable in plasma cells of line 15I5 X 71, 15I5 X 72, and 15I5 chickens but not in plasma cells of line 72, 15B, or 63 chickens.

This colorimetric assay for glycosylated hemoglobin can be performed in 120 min with equipment available in most clinical laboratories. The glucose moiety of glycosylated hemoglobin is converted to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by heating with oxalic acid for 60 min is an autoclave at 124 degrees C and 124 kPa (18 lb/in.2).

In a random sample of 30,444 larynges from slaughtered beef cattle, 441 (1.4%) had chronic diphtheria and 1,345 (4.4%) had papillomatosis.

In a previous study (1), we observed that antigen cross-reactive with structural protein of the endogenous retrovirus RAV-O is expressed in splenic Ig(+) B lymphocytes of immunized 15I5 X 71 chickens. The present experiments were undertaken to determine the relationship of this antigen to viral gag- and env-coded antigenic specificities. As analyzed by immunofluorescence with several antisera, group-specific determinants of the gp85 envelope glycoprotein as well as viral-related type E-specific determinants were detectable in islands of Ig(+) splenocytes; antigenic determinants of viral gag protein were not detected in the splenic islands.

Atenolol, Pindolol and Propranolol in single daily doses administered to 18 selected patients with mild essential hypertension achieved adequate control of blood pressure. Chlorothiazide had been initially administered twice a day without full control of blood pressure and this diuretic therapy was continued unaltered throughout the study. Methacholine challenge testing of respiratory function was performed during the placebo phase and with each beta adrenoreceptor-blocking drug.

Quality control trials have shown that, in routine practice, serum vitamin B12 estimations vary so much from laboratory to laboratory that serious confusion can result irrespective of whether microbiological or radioassay methods are used. Even experienced centres find the assay too insensitive and non-specific for a low level to be used as the sole criterion of vitamin B12 deficiency; the haemopoietic and biochemical sequelae of vitamin B12 deficiency also correlate poorly with the serum level. These basic difficulties with the assay seem to stem from the pattern of vitamin B12 (or cobalamin) binding in serum.

Immunofluorescence was employed to assay the spleens from several strains of chicken for the presence of antigen reactive with rabbit antisera elicited to the endogenous oncornavirus RAV-O. Antigen was detected in numerous islands or clusters of B lymphocytes that were localized to splenic red pulp of 15I(5) x 7(2) and 15I(5) x 7(1) chickens that had been sensitized to sheep red blood cells. Competition experiments provided evidence for cross-reactivity with structural antigen of RAV-0.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was measured as an indicator of glucose control in 180 children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus who received two daily injections of insulin as part of a highly structured treatment program. A total of 426 HbA1c determinations was made in the group of 180 patients. HbA1c values were elevated in most patients despite the aggressive treatment.

1. The effects of two beta-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs, metoprolol and atenolol, on plasma lipoproteins were studied in thirty-four patients using a single-blind cross-over design, with a 10-day placebo washout period between drugs. 2.

Negative contrast electron microscopic examination of intestinal contents from a 3-day-old pup with fatal diarrhea exhibited numerous rotavirus-like particles. Rotavirus was subsequently recovered, using MDCK cells, and was carried through 11 sub-passages; rotavirus-like particles were identified in each passage by negative contrast electron microscopic examination. Experimental inoculation of two 6-month-old Beagle dogs with purified intestinal contents did not result in clinical signs or virus shedding.

Beta adrenoreceptor blocking drugs with high intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (pindolol and alprenolol) produced significant elevation of plasma cyclic AMP levels, when compared to propranolol. In hypertensive patients, despite these marked differences in plasma cyclic AMP levels, similar blood pressure control was achieved with these three beta blockers.
