Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a new factor in the etiology of recurrent loss of pregnancy. For this purpose, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels as indicators of oxidative stress, and endocan levels, a marker of vascular dysfunction, were investigated in patients diagnosed with habitual abortion.

Materials And Methods: The research was conducted as a prospective case-control study.

Article Synopsis
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that leads to mucosal inflammation, and the study investigates the role of endocan, a proteoglycan linked to inflammation, in evaluating the severity of UC.
  • The study involved 65 participants, including 35 with UC and 30 healthy controls, where blood samples were analyzed for endocan and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels to assess disease condition.
  • Results showed significantly higher endocan and CRP levels in UC patients compared to controls, indicating that serum endocan could be a potential noninvasive marker for assessing UC severity and guiding treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how essential oils from DUB, HIR, and LAV affect lipid profiles and liver biomarkers in trained athletes over a 14-day period.
  • Thirty-four athletes were divided into four groups: three receiving different essential oils and one control group, with serum lipid levels measured before and after the intervention.
  • Results showed that DUB and HIR significantly improved high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to the control group, while low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased for DUB, with no changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides, or liver biomarkers.

Objectives: To assess the course of functional and morphological recovery of the kidney following the relief of obstruction with ureteral JJ stent in cases with unilateral impacted stones.

Materials And Methods: A total of 42 adult patients who were admitted to our clinic with unilateral obstructing impacted ureteral stones requiring JJ stent placement were included in the study. The course of functional recovery was assessed by evaluating the serum creatinine levels, renal resistive index (RRI) values and urinary levels of kidney injury molecule-1, neutrophil gelatinaseassociated lipocalin as well as microalbumin before at 1 day, 1 week and 4 weeks after JJ stent placement.

When irisin and adropin were discovered, it was popularly hoped that they would become therapies for metabolic disorders that threaten global health. However, contradictory results have been reported in the subsequent period. Irisin, induced by exercise or cold exposure, is believed to be a myokine that causes the browning of adipose tissue thus increasing energy expenditure.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study evaluated the role of galectin-3, a biochemical marker, in predicting pneumonia severity in COVID-19 patients, suggesting that higher levels indicate worse lung involvement.
  • - Researchers analyzed 176 confirmed COVID-19 patients, finding those with typical pneumonia had significantly higher galectin-3 levels compared to those with atypical or no pneumonia.
  • - A specific cut-off level for galectin-3 (18.9 ng/mL) was identified as a strong indicator for diagnosing typical pneumonia in COVID-19, with notable sensitivity and specificity.

Background/aim: This study aimed to examine serum paraoxonase 1 and 3 (PON1 and PON3) activities in benign and malignant diseases of the prostate, to determine lipid profile and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and to investigate changes in levels following robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP).

Materials And Methods: A total of 137 patients, including a control group, were enrolled in the study and assigned into four groups. Group 1 (n = 33) consisted of patients previously undergoing RALRP with no recurrence, group 2 (n = 36) consisted of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa) and undergoing RALRP, and group 3 (n = 34) consisted of patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The aim of this study is to investigate the acute and chronic effects of aerobic training performed indoors and outdoors on irisin, adropin, and cholesterol levels in winter. Thirty-two healthy males participated in this study. Participants were divided into two groups: outdoor group (n = 16) and indoor group (n = 16).

Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the role of nephrin and podocalyxin in determining the intervals between shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) sessions and how soon the kidney damage was recovered.

Methods: This work was a prospective study that included 30 patients with unilateral kidney stones. The patients' midflow urine samples were collected before SWL and 1 h, 1 day and 1 week after the procedure.

Objective: To measure plasma levels of chitinase-3-like 1 protein and its association with malondialdehyde in Behcet's disease patients.

Methods: The case-control study was conducted at Faculty of Medicine, Ataturk University Erzurum, Turkey, from October 2012 to March 2014, and comprised patients with Behcet's disease and healthy subjects. The patients were divided into two groups, as active and inactive, based on the classification of phases of activity in Behcet's disease.
