Article Synopsis
  • The rising cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), particularly extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB), pose a significant public health challenge, especially in developing countries where testing options are limited.
  • This study aimed to examine 81 multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) isolates from patients in Istanbul, Izmir, and Manisa to assess resistance patterns and the incidence of XDR-TB in the Marmara and Aegean regions.
  • Findings revealed no XDR-TB cases among the isolates studied, highlighting the importance of ongoing surveillance and tailored treatment protocols to effectively combat MDR-TB in these regions.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has recently become the major cause of chronic liver disease among patients on chronic hemodialysis. The use of erythropoietin for treatment of anemia has reduced the number of blood transfusions, but the frequency of HCV infection has not declined in hemodialysis units. The exact mode of transmission of HCV within dialysis units is as yet incompletely defined, but there is evidence to support nosocomial transmission by sharing dialysis machines in the hemodialysis unit.
