Objective: Gynecomastia and lipomastia are benign proliferations of the male breast affecting 32-65% of men. Numerous surgical procedures often result in stigmatizing scars when it comes to skin resection. The purpose of this study was to review skin-sparing techniques and to describe our skin-sparing approach to treat skin excess using transcutaneous netting.

Article Synopsis
  • The momentum space Josephson effect reveals supercurrent flow between weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at distinct momentum states, which was experimentally observed using a BEC with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling.
  • The researchers induced coherent spin-momentum oscillations through a sudden change in Raman detuning, demonstrating both plasma and regular Josephson oscillations under various conditions.
  • The findings align with theoretical models and highlight the impact of nonlinear interactions, while enabling measurements of the Josephson plasma frequency that relate to important concepts in particle physics, such as the mass of pseudo-Goldstone modes.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are a key antimicrobial feature of cellular innate immunity mediated by polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). NETs counteract microbes but are also linked to inflammation in atherosclerosis, arthritis, or psoriasis by unknown mechanisms. Here, we report that NET-associated RNA (naRNA) stimulates further NET formation in naive PMNs via a unique TLR8-NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent pathway.

Background: The main focus of traumatic brain injury (TBI) management is prevention of secondary injury. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH), the induction of a targeted low core body temperature, has been explored as a potential neuroprotectant in TBI. The aim of this article is to synthesize the available clinical data comparing the use of TH with the use of normothermia in TBI.

We experimentally realize the Peregrine soliton in a highly particle-imbalanced two-component repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate in the immiscible regime. The effective focusing dynamics and resulting modulational instability of the minority component provide the opportunity to dynamically create a Peregrine soliton with the aid of an attractive potential well that seeds the initial dynamics. The Peregrine soliton formation is highly reproducible, and our experiments allow us to separately monitor the minority and majority components, and to compare with the single component dynamics in the absence or presence of the well with varying depths.

Background: Ground-level falls are common among older adults and are the most frequent cause of traumatic intracranial bleeding. The aim of this study was to derive a clinical decision rule that safely excludes clinically important intracranial bleeding in older adults who present to the emergency department after a fall, without the need for a computed tomography (CT) scan of the head.

Methods: This prospective cohort study in 11 emergency departments in Canada and the United States enrolled patients aged 65 years or older who presented after falling from standing on level ground, off a chair or toilet seat, or out of bed.

The capability to reach ultracold atomic temperatures in compact instruments has recently been extended into space. Ultracold temperatures amplify quantum effects, whereas free fall allows further cooling and longer interactions time with gravity-the final force without a quantum description. On Earth, these devices have produced macroscopic quantum phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), superfluidity, and strongly interacting quantum gases.

Interferometry is a prime technique for modern precision measurements. Atoms, unlike light, have significant interactions with electric, magnetic, and gravitational fields, making their use in interferometric applications particularly versatile. Here, we demonstrate atom interferometry to image optical and magnetic potential landscapes over an area exceeding 240  μm×600  μm.

Purpose: Most North American trauma systems have designated trauma centres (TCs) including level I (ultraspecialized high-volume metropolitan centres), level II (specialized medium-volume urban centres), and/or level III (semirural or rural centres). Trauma system configuration varies across provinces and it is unclear how these differences influence patient distributions and outcomes. We aimed to compare patient case mix, case volumes, and risk-adjusted outcomes of adults with major trauma admitted to designated level I, II, and III TCs across Canadian trauma systems.

Breast reconstruction is recognized as an integrated part of breast cancer treatment today. Depending on tumor characteristics, different types of partial and total breast resections are indicated: tumorectomy, nipple/skin sparing or complete mastectomy. Patients' desires, general health status and body shape, as well as the necessity of adjuvant therapies, lead to the individual reconstruction plan.

Purpose: Trauma team leaders (TTLs) have traditionally been general surgeons; however, some trauma centres use a mixed model of care where both surgeons and non-surgeons (primarily emergency physicians) perform this role. The objective of this multicentre study was to provide a well-powered study to determine if TTL specialty is associated with mortality among major trauma patients.

Methods: Data were collected from provincial trauma registries at six level 1 trauma centres across Canada over a 10-year period.

Chitin is a highly abundant N-acetylglucosamine polysaccharide that has been linked to immune responses in the context of fungal infections and allergic asthma, especially to T helper 2 immune responses. Unfortunately, due to the frequent use of crude chitin preparations of unknown purity and degree of polymerization, there is still great uncertainty about how chitin activates different parts of the human immune system. We recently identified chitin oligomers of 6 N-acetylglucosamine units as the smallest immunologically active chitin motif and the innate immune receptor TLR2 as a primary chitin sensor on human and murine myeloid cells, but the response of further immune cells (e.
