Objective: Expanding staff levels is a strategy for hospitals to increase their surge capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether emergency health care workers (HCWs) are willing to work during crises or disasters, and which working conditions influence their decisions.

Methods: HCWs in the emergency departments (EDs) and intensive care units (ICUs) of 5 Dutch hospitals were surveyed about various disaster scenarios.

To investigate how host and pathogen diversity govern immunity against (Mtb), we performed a large-scale screen of vaccine-mediated protection against aerosol Mtb infection using three inbred mouse strains [C57BL/6 (B6), C3HeB/FeJ (C3H), Balb/c x 129/SvJ (C129F1)] and three Mtb strains (H37Rv, CDC1551, SA161) representing two lineages and distinct virulence properties. Acquired chemoresistance during chemotherapy, often accompanied by cross- and multi-resistance, limits therapeutic outcomes and leads to recurrence. In order to create in vitro model systems to understand acquired doxorubicin-resistance, we generated doxorubicin-resistant sublines of canine prostate adenocarcinoma and urothelial cell carcinoma cell lines. Chemoresistance to doxorubicin, cross-resistance to carboplatin, and the reversibility of the acquired resistance by the specific MDR1-inhibitor tariquidar were quantified in metabolic assays.

Background: Converging evidence from proteogenomic analyses prioritises thrombospondin-2 (TSP2) as a potential biomarker for idiopathic or heritable pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). We aimed to assess TSP2 levels in different forms of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and to define its clinical phenotype.

Methods: Absolute concentrations of TSP2 were quantified in plasma samples from a prospective single-centre cohort study including 196 patients with different forms of PH and 16 disease controls (suspected PH, but normal resting pulmonary haemodynamics).

In order to provide an alternative treatment option to lung transplantation for patients with end-stage lung disease, we aim for the development of an implantable biohybrid lung (BHL), based on hollow fiber membrane (HFM) technology used in extracorporeal membrane oxygenators. Complete hemocompatibility of all blood contacting surfaces is crucial for long-lasting BHL durability and can be achieved by their endothelialization. Autologous endothelial cells (ECs) would be the ideal cell source, but their limited proliferation potential excludes them for this purpose.

Generation of two human ISG15 knockout iPSC clones using CRISPR/Cas9 editing.

Interferon stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) is one of the most highly upregulated proteins in response to viral infection and is involved in numerous pathways with multiple mechanisms of actions. ISG15 deficiency has been reported to induce type I interferonopathy owing to defective negative regulation of IFN-I signalling as well as enhanced antiviral protection. Here, we have generated ISG15 knockout clones from human iPSCs, which provide useful cell resources to study mechanisms of ISG15 deficiency and gain more insight into the biological function of ISG15.

Music-assisted treadmill training (MATT) is a new therapeutic approach for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, combining treadmill training with rhythmic auditory cueing and visual feedback. The US Southwest plant Dalea parryi (Fabaceae) was investigated as part of an ongoing study of the potential of plant compounds for anthelmintic activity to the human pathogenic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. This has resulted in the isolation of three previously undescribed isoflavonoid metabolites, denoted parryans A-C, a chalcone, six pterocarpans, and three known compounds from the roots of D. parryi.

Owing to the absence of tactile sensory information, prosthetic users must rely on incidental visual and auditory cues. In this study, we investigated the effect of providing tactile perception on motor coordination during routine grasping and grasping under uncertainty.

CFTR encodes for a chloride ion channel expressed primarily in secretory epithelia in the airways, intestine, liver and other tissues. Here, we established a CFTR knock-in reporter cell line from a human iPSC line (MHHi006-A) using TALEN technology.

When Less Is More - Discrete Tactile Feedback Dominates Continuous Audio Biofeedback in the Integrated Percept While Controlling a Myoelectric Prosthetic Hand.

State of the art myoelectric hand prostheses can restore some feedforward motor function to their users, but they cannot yet restore sensory feedback. It has been shown, using psychophysical tests, that multi-modal sensory feedback is readily used in the formation of the users' representation of the control task in their central nervous system - their internal model. Hence, to fully describe the effect of providing feedback to prosthesis users, not only should functional outcomes be assessed, but so should the internal model.

Commonly Used Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) Parameters Do Not Influence Efficacy: Results of a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objectives: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarise available randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of EVLA efficacy, and to define the differences in success rate of variations in wavelength, administered energy, outcome definition, and follow up period.

Methods: A literature search was conducted in Embase, Medline (Ovid-SP), Cochrane Central Database, and Web of Science from inception to November 2017. RCTs with follow up of more than three months were included.
