For future nanoelectronic devices - such as room-temperature single electron transistors - the site-controlled formation of single Si nanocrystals (NCs) is a crucial prerequisite. Here, we report an approach to fabricate single Si NCs via medium-energy Si or Ne ion beam mixing of Si into a buried SiO layer followed by thermally activated phase separation. Binary collision approximation and kinetic Monte Carlo methods are conducted to gain atomistic insight into the influence of relevant experimental parameters on the Si NC formation process.

Microbial autotroph-heterotroph interactions influence biogeochemical cycles on a global scale, but the diversity and complexity of natural systems and their intractability to in situ manipulation make it challenging to elucidate the principles governing these interactions. The study of assembling phototrophic biofilm communities provides a robust means to identify such interactions and evaluate their contributions to the recruitment and maintenance of phylogenetic and functional diversity over time. Here we demonstrate that when Yersinia pesitis is grown in laboratory media, peptides from the medium remain associated with cellular biomass even after washing and inactivation of the bacteria by different methods. These peptides are characteristic of the type of growth medium and of the manufacturer of the medium, reflecting the specific composition of the medium. We analyzed biomass-associated peptides from cultures of two attenuated strains of Yersinia pestis [KIM D27 (pgm-) and KIM D1 (lcr-)] grown in several formulations of 4 different media (tryptic soy broth (TSB), brain-heart infusion (BHI), Luria-Bertani broth (LB), and glucose (G) medium) made from components purchased from different suppliers.

This article deals with uncertainty in the analysis of strain in silicon nanoscale structures and devices using nanobeam electron diffraction (NBED). Specimen and instrument related errors and instabilities and their effects on NBED analysis are addressed using a nanopatterned ultrathin strained silicon layer directly on oxide as a model system. We demonstrate that zero-loss filtering significantly improves the NBED precision by decreasing the diffuse background in the diffraction patterns.

We introduce a method to characterize the chemical distribution in nanostructures using STEM and affiliated spectroscopy techniques. The method is applicable to any nanostructure where the continuous layers of arbitrary geometry and dimensions can be identified. Several life-threatening infections, a major risk to adult solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients on immunosuppressive therapy, can be prevented by immunization. We analyzed sociodemographic parameters and the immunization status of adult liver transplant recipients (LTX-R, n=267) and renal transplant recipients (RTX-R, n=197) SOT recipients at the Transplantation Center, Berlin, Germany. Antibodies are widely used for diagnostic and therapeutic applications because of their sensitive and specific recognition of a wide range of targets; however, their application is limited by their structural complexity. More demanding applications require greater stability than can be achieved by immunoglobulin-based reagents. The T-cell population of a patient with persistent polyclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (PPBL) presenting with an intermittent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated disease was studied. Unstimulated T-cells did not express CD40 ligand (CD40L), whereas activation with IL-2 led to expression of this costimulatory molecule. In the case of an influenza pandemic a significant gap between influenza vaccine manufacturing capacities and vaccine demands must be expected on a global scale. This study explores the possibility to increase the number of vaccine doses that can be provided with the existing resources by using a lower amount of antigen per dose in an aluminum-adjuvanted whole virus vaccine formulation, instead of the standard dosage of 15 microg hemagglutinin (HA). Structural changes at annealing temperatures (T(an)) of 500-1,100 degrees C were investigated for thin Ta films which were sputter-deposited onto pure Si substrates and onto thermally oxidized Si. In the as-deposited state, the Ta layers predominantly consist of metastable tetragonal beta-Ta, whereby the [001] texture is independent of the substrate material. At lower annealing temperatures, the microstructural evolution is essentially the same for both Ta films.

The finding that the two tumor necrosis factor receptors (TNFR) exist in soluble form in various body fluids not only has substantiated the paradigm of naturally existing soluble cytokine receptors but also has represented a milestone on the road to the biochemical and biological characterization of the two TNFRs. This chapter gives a simple, basic protocol for the purification of the two soluble TNFRs.
