Dose planning study of target volume coverage with intensity- modulated radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: Penang General Hospital experience.

Background: To compare the dosimetric coverage of target volumes and organs at risk in the radical treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) between intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and three- dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT).

Materials And Methods: Data from 10 consecutive patients treated with IMRT from June-October 2011 in Penang General Hospital were collected retrospectively for analysis. For each patient, dose volume histograms were generated for both the IMRT and 3DCRT plans using a total dose of 70Gy.

Impact of adding aspirin to beta-blocker and statin in high-risk patients undergoing major vascular surgery.

Background: Beta-blockers (BB) and statins (S) independently have been shown to reduce perioperative mortality and myocardial infarction (MI) in patients undergoing vascular surgery. In this study we evaluated the benefits of adding aspirin (A) to BB and S (ABBS), with/without angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) on postoperative outcome in high-risk patients undergoing major vascular surgery.

Methods: Analysis of consecutive patients undergoing elective vascular surgery at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center was performed.

Importance: Treatment with intravitreal (IVT) injections has increased during the last several years as evidence has accumulated demonstrating the efficacy of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents in the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and various retinal vascular diseases. Although IVT injections are generally safe, infectious endophthalmitis is a rare but devastating complication, and the risk of morbidity and vision loss from endophthalmitis is high.

Objective: To examine the change in antibiotic resistance of ocular surface flora with repeated prophylactic use of antibiotics after IVT injection for AMD.

Cable-augmented, quad ligament tenodesis scapholunate reconstruction: rationale, surgical technique, and preliminary results.

Eight patients underwent scapholunate reconstruction using tensionable suture anchors. Adapted from a modified Brunelli technique, the anchors provide a fixed cable that reduces the scapholunate diastasis and maintains reduction during the healing phase. The flexor carpi radialis tendon graft is advanced through the scaphoid and stabilizes the volar scaphotrapezial ligament, dorsal scapholunate ligament, dorsal intercarpal ligament, and dorsal radiocarpal ligament.

The purpose of this research was to determine if there is any need, as per the Halstead-Reitan instructions, to test each hand uninterruptedly on the Finger Oscillation Test (FoT). To the authors' knowledge, there is no widely available research addressing this issue. Enabling administration of the FoT using alternate hands would theoretically make the administration of the assessment more efficient.

PTSD and key somatic complaints and cultural syndromes among rural Cambodians: the results of a needs assessment survey.

This article describes a culturally sensitive assessment tool for traumatized Cambodians, the Cambodian "Somatic Symptom and Syndrome Inventory" (SSI), and reports the outcome of a needs assessment conducted in rural Cambodia using the instrument. Villagers locally identified (N = 139) as still suffering the effects of the Pol Pot genocide were evaluated. All 139 had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as assessed by the PTSD Checklist (PCL), and they had elevated SSI scores.

Repair of the acutely unstable elbow: use of tensionable anchors.

Acute ruptures of the medial or lateral collateral ligaments of the elbow associated with elbow dislocations have traditionally been repaired back to their respective epicondyles using suture anchors or transosseous sutures. Tensioning of those ligaments using conventional techniques had been difficult because of the need to maintain tension while tying and securing sequential knots. Tensionable anchors are a new generation of anchors that have been used for rotator cuff repair, but can be employed for the repair of collateral ligaments and capsular tears.

Dynamic, mRNA-containing stress granules (SGs) form in the cytoplasm of cells under environmental stresses, including viral infection. Here, we report that early in Semliki Forest virus infection, the C-terminal domain of the viral nonstructural protein 3 (nsP3) forms a complex with Ras-GAP SH3-domain-binding protein (G3BP) and sequesters it into viral RNA replication complexes in a manner that inhibits the formation of SGs on viral mRNAs.

The purpose of the study was to describe the normal anatomy of the glenoid labrum to help identification of pathology and guide surgical repair. Twenty dry bone scapulae and 19 cadaveric shoulders were examined. Light microscopy was performed on 12 radial slices through the glenoid.

Background And Objectives: The aims of this prospective observational study were to assess the incidence of intraconal spread during peribulbar (extraconal) anesthesia by real-time ultrasound imaging of the retro-orbital compartment and to determine whether a complete sensory and motor block (with akinesia) of the eye is directly related to the intraconal spread.

Methods: Ultrasound imaging was performed in 100 patients who underwent a surgical procedure on the posterior segment of the eye. All patients received a peribulbar block using the inferolateral approach.

It is known that activity in secondary motor areas during observation of human limbs performing actions is affected by the observer's viewpoint, with first-person views generally leading to stronger activation. However, previous neuroimaging studies have displayed limbs in front of the observer, providing an offset view of the limbs without a truly first-person viewpoint. It is unknown to what extent these pseudo-first-person viewpoints have affected the results published to date.

Autophagy is a cellular process that sequesters cargo in double-membraned vesicles termed autophagosomes and delivers this cargo to lysosomes to be degraded. It is enhanced during nutrient starvation to increase the rate of amino acid turnover. Diverse roles for autophagy have been reported for viral infections, including the assembly of viral replication complexes on autophagic membranes and protection of host cells from cell death.

We tested the hypothesis that, when children learn to correctly count sets, they make a semantic induction about the meanings of their number words. We tested the logical understanding of number words in 84 children that were classified as "cardinal-principle knowers" by the criteria set forth by Wynn (1992). Results show that these children often do not know (1) which of two numbers in their count list denotes a greater quantity, and (2) that the difference between successive numbers in their count list is 1.

Efficient clocked electron transfer on superfluid helium.

Unprecedented transport efficiency is demonstrated for electrons on the surface of micron-scale superfluid helium-filled channels by co-opting silicon processing technology to construct the equivalent of a charge-coupled device. Strong fringing fields lead to undetectably rare transfer failures after over a billion cycles in two dimensions. This extremely efficient transport is measured in 120 channels simultaneously with packets of up to 20 electrons, and down to singly occupied pixels.

Postoperative visual acuity in patients with fuchs dystrophy undergoing descemet membrane-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty: correlation with the severity of histologic changes.

Objective: To investigate a correlation between the severity of histologic changes of the Descemet membrane in patients with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy and the best-corrected visual acuity (VA) after Descemet membrane-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK).

Methods: In a retrospective study design, we created a histologic grading system based on common characteristics observed histologically among 92 DSAEK specimens sent to the University of Wisconsin Eye Pathology Laboratory with a clinical diagnosis of Fuchs dystrophy from 3 separate corneal surgeons. Cases were graded as mild, moderate, or severe on the basis of guttae dispersion, presence of a laminated Descemet membrane, presence of embedded guttae, and density of guttae.

Trial-to-trial variability is a well-known issue in brain signals measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We aimed to investigate whether trial-to-trial variability does provide information about individual performance. Seventeen subjects observed a virtual reality grasping task in first-person view while either imagining (motor imagery during observation, MIO) or imitating (motor execution, ME) the movements.

Neck node bolus technique in the treatment of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma with Intensity-modulated radiotherapy.

Purpose: To study the effect of bolus versus no bolus in the coverage of the nodal tumour volume with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

Methods And Materials: This retrospective study used data from 5 consecutive patients with NPC who were treated with bolus for large neck nodes using IMRT from November 2011-January 2012 in our institute. All these patients were treated radically with IMRT according to our institution's protocol.
