The surgical treatment of malformed semilunar valves in congenital heart defects is challenging in terms of providing both longevity and the potential to grow with the recipient. We investigated a new surgical technique "Trileaflet Semilunar Valve Reconstruction" in an acute porcine model, a technique with geometrical properties that could remain sufficient and allow for some growth with the child. Two protocols for the organocatalyzed decarboxylative trichloromethylation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) substrates have been developed. Applying sodium trichloroacetate, as the trichloromethyl anion precursor, in combination with an organocatalyst and acetylated MBH-alcohols, the desired trichloromethylated products were obtained in good yields at room temperature in batch. The method was next extrapolated into a two-step continuous flow protocol, starting directly from the MBH alcohols, in combination with tributylamine acting both as base and catalyst.

The fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) plays a vital role in the development of the nervous system regulating a multitude of cellular processes. One of the interaction partners of the FGFR is the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), which is known to play an important role in neuronal development, regeneration and synaptic plasticity. This paper describes the design and implementation of a versatile, open-architecture research data acquisition system using a commercially available medical ultrasound scanner. The open architecture will allow researchers and clinicians to rapidly develop applications and move them relatively easy to the clinic. The system consists of a standard PC equipped with a camera link and an ultrasound scanner equipped with a research interface.

Cigarette smoking is the leading self-inflicted risk factor for cardiovascular diseases; it causes arterial stiffening with serious sequelea including atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysms. This work presents a new interpretation of arterial stiffening caused by smoking based on data published for rat pulmonary arteries. A structurally motivated "four fiber family" constitutive relation was used to fit the available biaxial data and associated best-fit values of material parameters were estimated using multivariate nonlinear regression.

The effects of high K intake on plasma K, myocardial K content and Na,K-ATPase concentration and on myocardial K uptake during KCl infusion were evaluated in rodents. Myocardial Na,K-ATPase was quantified in crude homogenates by K-dependent pNPPase activity in rats, and in intact samples by3H-ouabain binding in guinea pigs. Na, K-ATPase alpha isoform distribution was assessed by immunoblotting.

During a period of four and a half years 37 lower extremities with acute ischaemia were treated with thrombolysis. Angiographically, 35 cases demonstrated no suitable arteries for distal reconstruction. In two cases vascular surgery was not performed because of cardiac incompensation.

The effect of intra-arterial local thrombolysis or peripheral arterial occlusions seems to be well documented. As assessed by angiography, primary recanalisation is achieved in 65-90%. Using recombinant tissue plasminogen activator thrombolysis is achieved more frequently (90% vs 65-85%) and faster (4-8 hours vs 12-48 hours) than when using streptokinase or urokinase.
