Animal muscles have complex, three-dimensional structures with fibers oriented in various directions. The tongue, in particular, features a highly intricate muscular system composed of four intrinsic muscles and several types of extrinsic muscles, enabling flexible and diverse movements essential for feeding, swallowing, and speech production. Replicating these structures could lead to the development of multifunctional manipulators and advanced platforms for studying muscle-motion relationships.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) on time-to-treatment failure (TTF) in patients with unresectable and recurrent pancreatic cancer (PC) receiving first-line chemotherapy.
  • Among 1,394 patients analyzed, HRD was identified in 7.6% through genetic testing, with commonly affected genes being BRCA2 and ATM.
  • Results showed no significant TTF difference in the gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) group; however, in the FOLFIRINOX (FFX) group, HRD patients had a significantly longer TTF compared to non-HRD patients, suggesting HRD may influence treatment outcomes in certain chemotherapy regimens

After the report of 17 patients with occupational cholangiocarcinoma caused by long-term exposure to high concentrations of 1,2-dichloropropane and/or dichloromethane in a printing company in Osaka in 2014, additional five patients were diagnosed to have such cholangiocarcinoma. Cholangiocarcinoma was detected during regular health examination or follow-up for liver dysfunction in four of the five patients. Nearly all five patients presented with clinicopathological findings such as an elevated γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity at the diagnosis, regional dilatation of intrahepatic bile ducts without tumor-induced obstruction, chronic bile duct injury, and precancerous/early cancerous lesions (biliary intraepithelial neoplasia and intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct) at various sites of the bile duct.

Total syntheses of borolithochromes H1, H2, I1, and I2, the red pigments isolated from fossils of Jurassic putative red alga Solenopora jurassica, have been achieved. The naphthoquinone possessing a chiral sec-butyl side chain has been synthesized from (S)-2-methylbutanol. The Diels-Alder reaction of the chiral naphthoquinone and the previously reported diene was followed by one pot S-methylation/intramolecular Corey-Chaykovsky reaction/epoxide rearrangement to provide the benzo[gh]tetraphene skeleton.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the use of endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) with a 22-gauge Franseen needle for collecting tissue samples from solid tumors, focusing on its application in comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) tests, especially for pancreatobiliary cancer.
  • A total of 50 patients were analyzed, showing that the success rates for obtaining suitable samples for CGP were 86% and 76% through two quality control checks, with an adverse event rate of 4%.
  • The findings indicated that while EUS-TA using this method is feasible, a significant portion of the specimens did not meet CGP criteria, raising questions about sample adequacy for genomic analysis despite successful tests.

Total syntheses of borolithochromes A, D and G, red pigments isolated from fossils of Jurassic putative red alga Solenopora jurassica, have been achieved. The benzo[gh]tetraphene skeletons of the borate ligands in these substances were constructed using Diels-Alder reactions of aryl dienes with naphthoquinone, followed by intramolecular Corey-Chaykovsky reactions. Complexation of these ligands with trimethyl borate generated homocomplexes, which upon sequential O-demethylation produced borolithochromes A and G.

  • Sarcopenia, the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, affects survival rates in patients with biliary tract cancer, but its impact on overall survival is less clear.
  • A study of 386 patients used CT scans to measure skeletal muscle index (SMI) and skeletal muscle density (SMD) and found that patients with sarcopenia had shorter progression-free survival (PFS).
  • The research suggests that monitoring and improving muscular quantity and quality could be beneficial, emphasizing the need for nutritional and physical interventions in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated changes in blood markers and morphological features in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) who later developed pancreatic cancer.
  • Out of 3437 IPMN patients, 100 developed pancreatic carcinomas, with findings showing that CA19-9 elevation was more common in concomitant carcinomas compared to IPMN-derived ones.
  • The research concluded that while some morphological features indicated risk for IPMN-derived carcinomas, blood biomarkers had limited effectiveness in early cancer detection related to IPMNs.

  • - The study examines the efficacy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) for diagnosing solid pancreatic lesions, particularly focusing on the impact of biliary stents in patients with obstructive jaundice.
  • - Results showed that EUS-FNA accuracy and sensitivity were significantly lower in patients with biliary stents compared to those without, indicating that the presence of stents hampers diagnostic effectiveness.
  • - The findings suggest that EUS-FNA should ideally be performed before endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with biliary stent placement in cases of obstructive jaundice to improve diagnostic outcomes.

The Illumina MiSeq platform has been widely used as a standard method for studying the rumen microbiota. However, the low resolution of taxonomic identification is the only disadvantage of MiSeq amplicon sequencing, as it targets a part of the 16S rRNA gene. In the present study, we performed three experiments to establish a high-resolution and high-throughput rumen microbial profiling approach using a combination of MinION platform and buccal swab sample, which is a proxy for rumen contents.
