Futokadsura stem has been traditionally used to dispel wind-damp obstruction syndrome manifested as painful and stiff joints, tendon and muscle spasms, lower back pain, painful knees and pain from external injury. An aqueous extract of Futokadsura stem has previously been found to have neuro-protective effects in vitro. In this study, we aimed to investigate if the Futokadsura stem extract could protect the neuron in the brain of an Aβ-induced Alzheimer's Disease (AD)-like rat model by improving the learning and memory ability of the rats.

Background: It is well accepted that type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) results in the poor outcome of ischemic stroke. However, the mechanisms by which T2DM causes aggravated cerebral ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) injury are not clear. Recently, endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are considered to be related with the outcome of ischemic stroke.

The study was undertaken to explore whether piperlonguminine/dihydropiperlonguminine could inhibit the production of amyloidbeta (Abeta) in human neuroblastoma cells (SK-N-SH) and to examine the underlying mechanism of this effect. Piperlonguminine/dihydropiperlonguminine components (1:0.8) were extracted from Futokadsura stem, and then used to treat SK-N-SH cells at three different concentrations: 3.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive and memory decline. Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a transmembrane protein, it has been known to play an important role in AD pathogenesis. Previous studies have shown that a Chinese herb Futokadsura stem can selectively inhibit the expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene.
