Background And Aims: Acute variceal bleeding (AVB) is a major complication in patients with cirrhosis. Using a nationwide AVB audit, we performed a nested cohort study to determine whether full adherence to the AVB quality indicator (QI) improves clinical outcomes in patients with cirrhosis and AVB.

Approach And Results: We assessed real-world adherence to AVB QI among patients with cirrhosis admitted for AVB in all public hospitals in Singapore between January 2015 and December 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • Effective COVID-19 containment measures, including physical distancing and hygiene practices, remain crucial despite the availability of vaccines, with varying compliance levels across Asian countries influenced by awareness and motivation in the early pandemic phase.
  • The study aimed to analyze how knowledge and attitudes correlate with compliance to these measures in 14 regions through electronic surveys from May to June 2020.
  • Results showed that Southeast Asian participants were more likely to commit to physical distancing, with independent factors for high compliance including safe distancing practices, mask-wearing, preferred news sources, and psychological well-being.

Importance: Knowledge and attitude influence compliance and individuals' practices. The risk and protective factors associated with high compliance to these preventive measures are critical to enhancing pandemic preparedness.

Objective: This survey aims to assess differences in mental health, knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of preventive measures for COVID-19 amongst healthcare professionals (HCP) and non-healthcare professionals.

Background And Aim: Gastrointestinal manifestations of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may mimic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and social distancing measures may affect IBS patients negatively. We aimed to study the impact of COVID-19 on respondents with self-reported IBS.

Methods: We conducted an anonymized survey from May to June 2020 in 33 countries.

Background/aims: Adverse early life experiences are associated with the development of stroke, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory and ischemic heart diseases. These negative experiences may also play a role in the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)--a functional gastrointestinal disease. This review discusses the research to date on the parental, perinatal, and childhood risk and protective factors associated with the development of IBS.

Drug induced liver injury (DILI) may be different in the East compared to the West due to differing disease prevalence, prescribing patterns and pharmacogenetic profiles. To review existing literature on causative agents of DILI in the East compared to the West, a comprehensive literature search was performed on electronic databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and China National Knowledge Infrastructure without language restrictions. Studies which involve patients having DILI and reported the frequency of causative agents were included.

Background: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a cause of chronic hepatitis in immunosuppressed patients. Sustained virologic response rates to a 12-wk course of ribavirin therapy were reported to be > 70% in the West. This study describes the outcome of HEV treatment in a transplant center in Singapore.

Background & Aims: Drug induced liver injury (DILI) is largely underreported, leading to underestimation of its burden. Electronic detection of DILI in healthcare databases shows promise to overcome the issues of spontaneous reporting. The performance of detection algorithms may vary because of inconsistent DILI definition and detection criteria.
