Accumulation of lead in the crustose lichen Acarospora smaragdula sensu lato is reported in the vicinity of an ore- processing plant where it is subjected to acidification and metal particulate fallout. A combination of light microscopy, X-ray element mapping, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and other analytical techniques identifies Pb accumulation within specific fungal tissues derived from smelter particles (PM10s). No Pb was detected within the photobiont layer.

Objective: Immunologic effects of progesterone are mediated by the progesterone-induced blocking factor. Progesterone-induced blocking factor inhibits natural killer cytotoxic activity and arachidonic acid release from mononuclear cells. The relationship between increased prostaglandin synthesis and increased cytotoxic activity of the lymphocytes is still unclear; therefore we investigated the effect of progesterone-induced blocking factor-neutralizing antibody, as well as simultaneous indomethacin treatment, on interleukin 12 production.

The electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectra of 16 cinchona alkaloid compounds were studied for the first time. The electron ionization (EI) spectra of 22 cinchona alkaloids were also recorded, 14 of which had not been examined previously. In the case of EI the characteristic direction of the fragmentation is the scission of the C8-C9 bond.

Several ethyl pyruvate and dihydrocinchonidine adducts, formed by non-covalent interactions with alkali cations, have been identified for the first time using electrospray ionization mass and tandem mass spectrometry. This type of adduct may have an important role in asymmetric reactions of pyruvates in the presence of cinchonas.

The sonochemical hydrosilylation of alkyl substituted cyclohexanones catalyzed by Rh (PPh3)3Cl is described. The application of ultrasonic irradiation during the reaction highly enhances the reaction rates and produces higher yields than those obtained in silent reactions. The stereoselectivity of the reaction has not been changed, the isomeric distribution, i.

The influence of costimulation on the activation of naive CD8+ T cells and thymocytes was studied in vitro using H-Y-specific TCR-transgenic mice and H-Y antigenic peptide. Using a variety of physiological APC types, the activation of naive CD8+ T cells depended strictly on costimulation, which could not be substituted by high epitope density. T cell activation is known to be regulated by the interactions between CD86/CD80 and CD28/CD152, although it remains unclear whether the B7 isoforms have distinct roles.

Rationale: Several investigators have shown that male rodents are more sensitive than females to morphine's antinociceptive effects.

Objective: The present study was conducted to determine whether this sex difference is stable after chronic morphine treatment.

Results: Acutely administered morphine produced significantly greater hotplate and tail withdrawal antinociception in males than in females.

Methylamphetamine and amphetamine, the two major metabolites of deprenyl in the rat brain were analyzed using HPLC method combined with electrospray-mass spectrometer. (-)-Deprenyl and (+)-deprenyl were orally administered to rats either in a single dose of 10 mg/kg, or three times a week for three weeks. The metabolites were determined in four different parts of the rat brain, such as in the frontal cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, and hypophysis.

In a previous study, we found sex differences in the potency of morphine as a discriminative stimulus; the present study was designed to determine whether sex differences in gonadal hormones contribute to sex differences in morphine's discriminative effects. Adult female and male rats were gonadectomized (GNDZ) or sham-gonadectomized (SHAM), and then trained to discriminate 3.0 mg/kg morphine from saline.

The potential suppressive effects of allospecific anergic T cells were investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Allospecific T cells were rendered unresponsive in vitro using immobilized anti-CD3 mAb. These anergic T cells profoundly inhibited proliferation of responsive T cells in an antigen-specific manner.

Using an IL-2-secreting, noncytolytic, H-Y-specific, CD8+ T cell clone, the functional consequences of Ag presentation by T cells to T cells were investigated. Incubation of the T cells with H-Y-soluble peptide led to nonresponsiveness to Ag rechallenge. This was due to the simultaneous induction of apoptosis, involving approximately 40% of the T cells, and of anergy in the surviving cells.

Aspects of performance on verbal list learning tasks, such as recall, recognition, and response bias, may vary with severity in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We administered a 10-item, single-category word list learning test using selective reminding procedures to 188 patients with probable AD and 36 healthy normal controls with equivalent age and education. We analyzed the total number of words recalled as well as discrimination and response bias indexes derived from signal detection theory.

Patients with AIDS and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) bacteremia are at high risk for relapse and emergence of resistant isolates during monotherapy with clarithromycin. Ninety-five AIDS patients with MAC bacteremia received clarithromycin plus clofazimine, with or without ethambutol, in a prospective, multicenter, randomized open-label trial. Of 80 patients with positive baseline cultures, sterilization or a 2 log10 reduction in colony-forming units of MAC in two consecutive blood cultures occurred in 69% of both groups.

We studied the integrity of working memory operations in 38 HIV-seropositive and 20 seronegative drug users, using a modified version of the Tower of London task. This new task, the Tower of London-Working Memory version (TOL-WM), includes a delayed-response component in addition to the planning required for successful performance of the standard TOL. Symptomatic HIV-seropositive participants solved significantly fewer TOL-WM problems compared to matched seronegative controls.

Previous studies indicate that mu opioid agonists such as morphine may produce greater antinociception in male than in female rodents. The present study was designed to investigate the generality of this finding across dose, time and type of opioid agonist. In adult female and male Sprague-Dawley rats, time-effect curves were obtained for vehicle and three doses each of the mu agonists fentanyl and buprenorphine, the kappa agonists (5alpha,7alpha,8alpha)-(-)-N-methyl-[7-(1-pyrrolidinyl )-1-oxaspiro-(4,5)dec-8-yl]benzeneacetamide (U69,593) and bremazocine and the delta agonists [D-Pen2,D-Pen5]enkephalin (DPDPE) and deltorphin on the 52 degrees C hot-plate and tail-withdrawal (immersion) assays.

The molecular basis of hereditary complement factor I deficiency is described in two pedigrees. In one pedigree, there were two factor I-deficient siblings, one of whom was asymptomatic and the other suffered from recurrent pyogenic infections. Their factor I mRNA was analyzed by reverse transcription of fibroblast RNA followed by amplification using the polymerase chain reaction.

The Tower of London procedure (TOL) is being utilized increasingly in clinical and experimental contexts, although there is considerable variation in how it is administered and scored. The procedure detailed here was developed using Shallice's original problems and, along with the Porteus Maze Test (PMT), was administered to 205 elementary school students and 74 young adults. TOL scores increased with age in a linear fashion, and the performance of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade subjects were not statistically different from the young adults.

It is generally assumed that Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) bacteremia, once it develops, is unremitting. On the basis of this presumption, changes in the level of mycobacteremia are used to gauge therapeutic response. In 7 (12%) of 60 patients enrolled in a prospective trial of MAC bacteremia and AIDS, bacteremia became undetectable before the initiation of antimycobacterial therapy.
