Bactofilins have emerged as a widespread family of cytoskeletal proteins with important roles in bacterial morphogenesis, but their precise mode of action is still incompletely understood. In this study, we identify the bactofilin cytoskeleton as a key regulator of cell growth in the stalked budding alphaproteobacterium . We show that, in this species, bactofilin polymers localize dynamically to the stalk base and the bud neck, with their absence leading to unconstrained growth of the stalk and bud compartments, indicating a central role in the spatial regulation of cell wall biosynthesis.

In this paper we study the proximity effect in superconductor-normal metal heterostructures based on first principles calculations with treating the pairing potential as an adjustable parameter. The superconducting order parameter (anomalous density) is obtained from the Green-function by solving the Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with the Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. The results are interpreted for an Au/Nb(0 0 1) system.

To study the optical rotation of the polarization of light incident on multilayer systems consisting of atomically thin conductors and dielectric multilayers we present a general method based on transfer matrices. The transfer matrix of the atomically thin conducting layer is obtained using the Maxwell equations. We derive expressions for the Kerr (Faraday) rotation angle and for the ellipticity of the reflected (transmitted) light as a function of the incident angle and polarization of the light.

We find that the conductivity is independent of the strength of the trigonal warping and it is 3 times as large as that without trigonal warping and 6 times larger than that in single layer graphene. Although the trigonal warping of the dispersion relation around the valleys in the Brillouin zone is effective only for low-energy excitations, our result shows that its role cannot be neglected in the zero-energy minimal conductivity.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Although plasmapheresis has been recommended to reverse nephrotoxic elevations of serum free light chains (sFLCs), there are scant published data on removal of sFLC measured with modern assays.
Study Design And Methods: sFLC levels were recorded in two patients with myeloma-associated renal failure receiving multiple plasmapheresis procedures.
Results: In one patient, presenting with acute renal failure 8 months after diagnosis of kappa-LC myeloma, 16 plasmapheresis procedures neither reduced sFLC levels (percent removal ranging from -70% to +40%) nor improved renal function.
Several case reports have suggested an association between infections and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). In Case 1, a 37-year-old female presented with TTP 6 times over 7 years, requiring 242 therapeutic plasma exchanges (TPE), for a per-course range of 4-57 TPE (median 48), and treatment durations of 4-241 days (median 71 days), largely on account of multiple exacerbations (range 0-3, median 3). Twelve of 17 (71%) of her presentations or exacerbations were associated with suspected infections, with confirmation in 9 episodes.

We demonstrate that the nonexact velocity reversal and the diffraction at the edges of the normal-superconductor contact render the classical dynamics of these systems mixed indicating the limitations of a widely used retracing approximation. We point out the close relation between the mixed classical phase space and the properties of the quantum states of Andreev billiards, including periodic orbit scarring and localization of the wave function onto other classical phase space objects such as intermittent regions and quantized tori.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe examine the density of states of an Andreev billiard and show that any billiard with a finite upper cutoff in the path length distribution P(s) will possess an energy gap on the scale of the Thouless energy. An exact quantum mechanical calculation for different Andreev billiards gives good agreement with the semiclassical predictions when the energy dependent phase shift for Andreev reflections is properly taken into account. Based on this new semiclassical Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation of the density of states, we derive a simple formula for the energy gap.

The project was based on an agreement with the office of United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and comprised the entry of registration data of refugees with medical condition (Priority Medical Database), and classification (Priority Medical Screening) and medical evacuation of refugees (Priority Medical Evacuation) in Macedonia. To realize the Priority Medical Screening project plan, IOM developed and set up a Medical Database linked to IOM/UNHCR HEP database, recruited and trained a four-member data entry team, worked out and set up a referral system for medical cases from the refugee camps, and established and staffed medical contact office for refugees in Skopje and Tetovo.
