Hippocampal Noradrenaline Is a Positive Regulator of Spatial Working Memory and Neurogenesis in the Rat.

Loss of noradrenaline (NA)-rich afferents from the Locus Coeruleus (LC) ascending to the hippocampal formation has been reported to dramatically affect distinct aspects of cognitive function, in addition to reducing the proliferation of neural progenitors in the dentate gyrus. Here, the hypothesis that reinstating hippocampal noradrenergic neurotransmission with transplanted LC-derived neuroblasts would concurrently normalize both cognitive performance and adult hippocampal neurogenesis was investigated. Post-natal day (PD) 4 rats underwent selective immunolesioning of hippocampal noradrenergic afferents followed, 4 days later, by the bilateral intrahippocampal implantation of LC noradrenergic-rich or control cerebellar (CBL) neuroblasts.

Many emerging contaminants pass through conventional wastewater treatment plants, contaminating surface and drinking water. The implementation of advanced oxidation processes in existing plants for emerging contaminant remediation is one of the challenges for the enhancement of water quality in the industrialised countries. This paper reports on the production of a TiO nano-layer on quartz wool in a relevant amount, its characterisation by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and its use as a photocatalyst under ultraviolet radiation for the simultaneous mineralisation of five emerging organic contaminants (benzophenone-3, benzophenone-4, carbamazepine, diclofenac, and triton X-100) dissolved in deionised water and tap water.

Copper(II) complexes with an avian prion N-terminal region and their potential SOD-like activity.

Potentiometric and spectroscopic (UV-Vis, CD and EPR) studies were carried out on copper(II) complexes with chicken prion protein N-terminal fragments, Ac-(PHNPGY)(4)-NH(2), and the mutated residue, Ac-(PHNPGF)(4)-NH(2), to assess the role of tyrosine in the copper coordination. Both thermodynamic and spectroscopic results indicate that chicken prion fragments are not able to bind more than two copper ions and only with the involvement of side chain tyrosine groups. The prevailing complex shows one copper ion bound to four imidazole nitrogen atoms in the 1:1 metal to ligand ratio systems.
