T-cell mediated adaptive immunity against viruses relies on recognition of virus-derived peptides by CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells. Detection of pathogen-derived peptide-MHC-I complexes triggers CD8(+) T cells to eliminate the infected cells. Viruses have evolved several mechanisms to avoid recognition, many of which target the MHC-I antigen-processing pathway.
