Europe imports large amounts of soybean that are predominantly used for livestock feed, mainly sourced from Brazil, USA and Argentina. In addition, the demand for GM-free soybean for human consumption is project to increase. Soybean has higher protein quality and digestibility than other legumes, along with high concentrations of isoflavones, phytosterols and minerals that enhance the nutritional value as a human food ingredient.

Article Synopsis
  • Cowpea is vital for protein in sub-Saharan Africa, but its productivity isn't increasing fast enough to meet the needs of a growing population.
  • Research indicates that Rubisco, an important enzyme for photosynthesis, is deactivated more quickly in cowpea than was previously thought.
  • The study suggests that optimizing Rubisco's deactivation process in shaded conditions could significantly enhance cowpea productivity by potentially reducing daily productivity losses.

C4 photosynthesis is a complex trait resulting from a series of anatomical and biochemical modifications to the ancestral C3 pathway. It is thought to evolve in a stepwise manner, creating intermediates with different combinations of C4 -like components. Determining the adaptive value of these components is key to understanding how C4 photosynthesis can gradually assemble through natural selection.
