Background And Objective: Cardiorespiratory polygraphy (CRP) is the predominant technology used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in tertiary centres in the UK. Nocturnal pulse oximetry (NPO) is, however, cheaper and more accessible. This study evaluated the ability of NPO indices to predict OSA in typically developing (TD) children.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated nocturnal pulse oximetry patterns in moderate to late preterm infants, focusing on oxygen desaturations and their relationship with age.
  • Median oxygen desaturation rates increased significantly in the first three weeks, while mean oxygen saturation levels dipped before rising again; these changes are influenced by postnatal age.
  • The findings indicate a need for further research to establish normal oxygen index ranges in preterm infants, as many desaturations occurred without associated apnoea or hypopnoea events.
