Objective: The objective of this study was to offer further evidence of the utility of metabolic monitoring in early recognition of sepsis. Metabolic derangement in sepsis is of increasing interest. Sepsis was redefined as a dysregulated host response to infection, and studies have since emerged advising that disrupted metabolic pathways in sepsis may interfere with the host's ability to convert oxygen to useable energy.

Methods: We used the 2014 National Inpatient Sample database to evaluate the association of hospital urbanicity with (1) mortality and (2) prolonged hospital stay, defined as ≥ 75th percentile of the study population. We conducted a mixed-effects logistic regression analysis adjusting for sociodemographic variables and medical comorbidities.
