Objective: To understand SARS-CoV-2 transmission in early care and education (ECE) settings, we implemented a Test to Stay (TTS) strategy, which allowed children and staff who were close contacts to COVID-19 to remain in person if they agreed to test twice after exposure. We describe SARS-CoV-2 transmission, testing preferences, and the number of in-person days saved among participating ECE facilities.

Methods: From March 21 through May 27, 2022, 32 ECE facilities in Illinois implemented TTS.

Objectives: Quarantine after exposure to COVID-19 has resulted in substantial loss of in-person learning in schools from prekindergarten through grade 12. Test to Stay (TTS), a strategy that limits the spread of SARS-CoV-2 while prioritizing in-person learning, requires substantial investment in resources. The objective of this study was to assess the perceived benefits, barriers, and facilitators of implementing TTS in an urban school district in the Midwest serving primarily Black or African American people with low income.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Test to Stay (TTS) program in reducing COVID-19 transmissions in schools and its impact on in-person learning across four school districts in the U.S. from September to November 2021.
  • Over 370 COVID-19 cases and more than 2,500 close contacts were reported, with TTS participation rates varying significantly between districts, resulting in a range of secondary and tertiary attack risks.
  • The implementation of TTS is linked to saving a substantial number of in-person learning days, but factors such as testing access, communication, and school resources played a crucial role in its success.

Article Synopsis
  • * TTS allowed participants to remain in school if they were asymptomatic, masked, practiced physical distancing, and underwent regular COVID-19 testing after exposure, with 90 schools implementing the strategy during a specified period in late 2021.
  • * During TTS implementation, the secondary attack risk for COVID-19 transmission was low (1.5%), with most cases limited to students and no evidence of further transmission in schools, saving up to

Between January and April 2012, the city of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services investigated an outbreak involving 19 case patients who had tested positive for Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium with indistinguishable pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns. All cases were residents of or traveled to the city of Long Beach, California, during their incubation period, and the majority of patients reported eating at one of two restaurants in Long Beach. This article describes the outbreak investigation that traced the source to an asymptomatic food handler working at both restaurants and highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for food handlers when faced with local outbreaks of diarrheal illness.

Packaged water treatment schemes represent a growing model for providing safer water in low-income settings, yet post-distribution recontamination of treated water may limit this approach. This study evaluates drinking water quality and household water handling practices in a floating village in Tonlé Sap Lake, Cambodia, through a pilot cross-sectional study of 108 households, approximately half of which used packaged water as the main household drinking water source. We hypothesized that households purchasing drinking water from local packaged water treatment plants would have microbiologically improved drinking water at the point of consumption.
