Background: We sought to clarify the current incidence, risk factors and symptoms of disseminated complex (dMAC) infection in admitted people living with HIV in a hospital in the Southeast of Spain.

Methods: 5-years observational, retrospective and single-centre study. Demographic, clinical and analytical variables, along with microbiological, treatment and follow-up were collected.

Objectives: Our purpose was to establish different cut-off points based on the lung ultrasound score (LUS) to classify COVID-19 pneumonia severity.

Methods: Initially, we conducted a systematic review among previously proposed LUS cut-off points. Then, these results were validated by a single-centre prospective cohort study of adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Purpose: To identify the defining lung ultrasound (LUS) findings of COVID-19, and establish its association to the initial severity of the disease and prognostic outcomes.

Method: Systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. We queried PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Database and Scopus using the terms ((coronavirus) OR (covid-19) OR (sars AND cov AND 2) OR (2019-nCoV)) AND (("lung ultrasound") OR (LUS)), from 31st of December 2019 to 31st of January 2021.

At the moment, several COVID-19 scoring systems have been developed. It is necessary to determine which one better predicts a poor outcome of the disease. We conducted a single-center prospective cohort study to validate four COVID-19 prognosis scores in adult patients with confirmed infection at ward.

Background: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are both complications linked with COVID-19. Lower limb point-of-care clinical ultrasound (POCUS) could detect occult clots, helping decide whom to treat with anticoagulation.

Objectives: To determine proximal DVT prevalence with POCUS screening among hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence of proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Between April 22nd and 30th, 2020, 87 patients were screened; 26 were either discharged from or still in the ICU, with only 4 patients identified with DVT.
  • While DVT was low among those receiving anticoagulant prophylaxis, pulmonary embolism (PE) was found in 5 patients (23.8%) who had no DVT, indicating significant risk for PE despite prophylaxis.

Article Synopsis
  • Cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) is a severe complication in COVID-19 patients, with treatment typically being tocilizumab, although the role of glucocorticoids (GC) remains debated.
  • A study involving 92 COVID-19 patients with CSS assessed the outcomes of those treated with GC alone, GC plus tocilizumab, and tocilizumab alone, measuring various health markers and mortality rates.
  • Results indicated that patients receiving GC showed lower event rates (like intubation and death) compared to those receiving only tocilizumab, suggesting that early GC use may improve survival and reduce the need for additional treatments.

Symptoms of hypopituitarism are usually chronic and nonspecific, but rarely the disease can have acute and life threatening manifestations. We report a 53 years old female with a pituitary adenoma that was admitted to our hospital because of syncope. The electrocardiogram showed sinus bradycardia with a prolonged QT interval.

Mucormycosis is an unusual fungal infection that usually affects immunosuppressed patients. Small outbreaks of mucormycosis have been previously reported. We present two clinical cases of fatal rhinocerebral mucormycosis with a close temporal relationship between them and a possible nosocomial transmission: case 1 was a 75-year-old male with diabetes and COPD, treated with antibiotics and systemic corticosteroids, who developed rhinocerebral mucormycosis.

Background: The current recommendation for the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in solid organ transplant candidates is isoniazid for 9 months, but this treatment has the main problem of frequently reaching the posttransplant period.

Methods: This is the study of efficacy and safety of a 3-month regimen with isoniazid and rifampicin (3HR) in lung transplant candidates in the Reina Sofía Hospital in Córdoba.

Results: Three hundred and ninety-eight lung transplant patients were evaluated.
