Small bowel obstruction caused by intussusception secondary to metastatic melanoma.

Small bowel occlusion by intussusception is not common in adults. It may be due tumor lesion such as melanoma metastase. Bowel melanoma can be a primary lesion or metastases of extra-intestinal melanoma.

Adipose-derived stem cells sustain prolonged angiogenesis through leptin secretion.

Recent studies suggest that adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) play a role in tissue remodeling through the release of cytokines and growth factors. We compared the secreted cytokine profile of hypoxia-conditioned ASCs (hASCs) with normoxic ASCs (nASCs) and we analyzed the effect of ASCs conditioned medium (CM) on endothelial cells. We found that hypoxia induced a transient upregulation of VEGF in ASCs and a notable and enduring upregulation of leptin mRNA expression 30-fold greater than control after 24 h and up to 60-fold greater than control at day 7.

Flavopiridol induces phosphorylation of AKT in a human glioblastoma cell line, in contrast to siRNA-mediated silencing of Cdk9: Implications for drug design and development.

Cdk9 and Cdk7 are cdc2-like serine/threonine kinases that stabilize RNA transcript elongation through RNA polII carboxyl terminal domain (CTD) phosphorylation and are considered suitable targets for cancer therapy. The effects of flavopiridol and of siRNA-mediated inhibition of Cdk9 and/or Cdk7 were analyzed in human glioblastoma and human prostate cancer cell lines. One finding revealed that Cdk9 and Cdk7 could substitute each other in RNA polII CTD phosphorylation in contrast to the in vitro system.

[Pre-hospitalization care in tactical environment].

The author has identified the main topics in actual different guidelines in pre-hospitalization critical care managing of trauma in military operation areas (MOA). The Italian army main battlefield organization and others NATO experiences. The author reviews the literature regarding the most common military procedures, mainly focused on shock first aid, crystalloid and colloid use and a personal experience on this topic is also presented.
