Pediatrics ACES and related life event screener (PEARLS): translation, transcultural adaptation, and validation to Brazilian Portuguese.

Objective: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been associated with negative health outcomes. Screening for ACEs is crucial for improving health results, however, there is a shortage of standardized tools designed for children in Brazilian Portuguese. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Pediatrics ACES and Related Life Event Screener (PEARLS) for use in Brazil.

Gestational Diabetes in the Population Served by Brazilian Public Health Care. Prevalence and Risk Factors.

Objective:  To assess the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus and the main associated risk factors in the population served by the Brazilian Unified Health System in the city of Caxias do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Materials And Methods:  A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was conducted. Maternal variables were collected from the medical records of all pregnant women treated at the basic health units in 2016.

Association between exposure to urban waste and emotional and behavioral difficulties in schoolchildren.

Objective: To evaluate the association between living near waste recycling sites and emotional or behavioral difficulties in schoolchildren.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study with schoolchildren aged 6-13 years old from disadvantaged communities in a Brazilian city, divided between those who live less than 100m away from the central point of the recycling site and those that live more than 150m away from the site, as a control group and classified through georeferencing. The emotional and behavioral difficulties were investigated using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire tool.

The impact of asthma in Brazil: a longitudinal analysis of data from a Brazilian national database system.

Objective:: To present official longitudinal data on the impact of asthma in Brazil between 2008 and 2013.

Methods:: This was a descriptive study of data collected between 2008 and 2013 from an official Brazilian national database, including data on asthma-related number of hospitalizations, mortality, and hospitalization costs. A geographical subanalysis was also performed.

Use of methylphenidate among medical students: a systematic review.

Objective: To review the effects of methylphenidate on cognitive enhancement, memory, and performance in medical students.

Methods: A review of four databases (LILACS, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SciELO), analyzing the title and abstract of all articles published between 1990 and 2012 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Selected articles were read in entirety, including in the review those that met the established criteria.

Severe lower respiratory tract infection in infants and toddlers from a non-affluent population: viral etiology and co-detection as risk factors.

Background: Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is a major cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality, especially among non-affluent communities. In this study we determine the impact of respiratory viruses and how viral co-detections/infections can affect clinical LRTI severity in children in a hospital setting.

Methods: Patients younger than 3 years of age admitted to a tertiary hospital in Brazil during the months of high prevalence of respiratory viruses had samples collected from nasopharyngeal aspiration.

Urban air pollutants are significant risk factors for asthma and pneumonia in children: the influence of location on the measurement of pollutants.

Background: Air pollution is associated with a substantial burden on human health; however, the most important pollutants may vary with location. Proper monitoring is necessary to determine the effect of these pollutants on respiratory health.

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the role of outdoor, indoor and personal exposure to combustion-related pollutants NO(2) and O(3) on respiratory health of children in a non-affluent urban area of São Paulo, Brazil.
