β-Glucans comprise a group of β-D-glucose polysaccharides (glucans) that occur naturally in the cell walls of bacteria, fungi, and cereals. Its degradation is catalyzed by β-glucanases, enzymes that catalyze the breakdown of β-glucan into cello-oligosaccharides and glucose. These enzymes are classified as endo-glucanases, exo-glucanases, and glucosidases according to their mechanism of action, being the lichenases (β-1,3;1,4-glucanases, EC 3.

Article Synopsis
  • Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) serve as important prebiotics in the food industry, requiring high purity for optimal health benefits.
  • This research focuses on immobilizing the enzyme MpXyn10, which efficiently produces XOS from eucalyptus wood.
  • The study achieved over 90% enzyme activity retention and significant XOS production using Purolite-MpXyn10, indicating its potential for practical application in biorefinery processes.

The lignocellulosic biomass comprises three main components: cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Degradation and conversion of these three components are attractive to biotechnology. This study aimed to prospect fungal lignocellulolytic enzymes with potential industrial applications, produced through a temporal analysis using and seeds as carbon sources.

Sound evidence supports a role for interleukin-17 (IL-17) -producing γδ T cells and IL-17-producing helper T (Th17) cells in intestinal homeostasis, especially in intestinal barrier integrity. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the role of IL-17 cytokine in the regulation of intestinal immunity and obesity-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS) in an experimental murine model. C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) mice and mice lacking the IL-17 cytokine receptor (IL-17RA ) were fed either a control diet (CD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 9 weeks.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor compound that is continuously released into the environment and is barely degraded in wastewater treatment plants. A previous study showed that free Pleurotus ostreatus laccase is efficient in degrading BPA producing less toxic metabolites. In the present study, this laccase was successfully immobilized onto MANAE-agarose, improving its efficiency in degrading BPA and its thermal and storage stabilities.
