Lima beans () are a cornerstone crop of Delaware's processing vegetable industry. Root-knot nematodes (RKNs; spp.) cause galling of root systems, which severely reduces yield.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFruit rot in winterberry is associated with a complex of fungal pathogens. Among them, plays a unique role by infecting flowers at bloom, resulting in symptom development in mature fruit. This research aimed to identify at what stage of maturation fruit can develop disease symptoms and correlate changes in fruit physiology (sugar and phenolic content) and environment (temperature and light intensity) with disease incidence.

This study compares the nasal deposition and nasal retention of a radiolabeled solution of ciclesonide nasal aerosol (CIC-hydrofluoroalkane [HFA]) with a radiolabeled suspension of mometasone furoate monohydrate aqueous nasal spray (MFNS) in subjects with either perennial allergic rhinitis (AR) or seasonal AR.
Methods: In this open-label, single-dose, randomized, crossover scintigraphy study, 14 subjects with symptomatic AR received a single dose of radiolabeled 74-μg CIC-HFA (37 μg/spray, 1 spray/each nostril) via a nasal metered-dose inhaler or a single dose of radiolabeled 200-μg MFNS (50 μg/spray, 2 sprays/each nostril), with a minimum 5-day washout period between treatments.
The article considers the actual issues of teaching laboratory medicine to students of medical faculty and to physicians getting trained in different programs of postgraduate education. The major models of interaction between clinical physicians and specialists of laboratory diagnostic are considered. The proposed model of teaching of laboratory medicine is developed in collaboration with clinical chairs and is based on the principle of "clinical laboratory council of physicians".

Allergic syndromes are highly prevalent and are comprised of a wide variety of clinical problems, including rhinitis, conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis and urticaria, asthma, and food allergies. Numerous studies have shown that allergic syndromes are both underdiagnosed and undertreated. This is related to many factors, including trivialization of allergic conditions by physicians and patients, failure to adhere to diagnostic and treatment guidelines, and dissatisfaction with conventional pharmacologic treatments.

First, we linked Washington State driver's license records (DOL) to the state birth files to assess how well driver's licenses can be linked to a public health database. We were able to match 78.

Background: Stature is an important determinant of several reproductive and non-reproductive health problems. Documentation of secular trends in stature has been based primarily on cross-sectional studies of special populations, primarily of men. The objective of this study is to determine how growth and socio-economic status (SES) factors relate to stature changes among lineal female relatives, maternal grandmothers to mothers.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Both maternal socio-economic status (SES) and growth measures are themselves interrelated and are also related to infant birthweight. The objective of this study is to compare the relative importance of such maternal measures as determinants of birthweight of female infants-the prospective mothers of the next generation.
Methods: The study base was derived from a population-based multiethnic intergenerational cohort: the Washington State Intergenerational Cohort.
The measurement of specific IgE antibodies has progressed so that highly reproducible, accurate, and quality-controlled tests are available [62]. These tests can certainly assist all physicians in evaluating allergic problems and are likely to be used widely in the future. Continued research is allowing the refinement of these tests as well as increasing the understanding of allergens and allergic disease.

Study Design: This hospital-based case-control study included 181 preeclampsia cases and 349 control subjects. Participants provided information about their birth weight and other covariates that included medical and reproductive history, prepregnancy weight, and adult height.

Study Design: We measured the prevalence of exposure to intimate partner violence and fear of a partner during pregnancy among 4750 residents of Vancouver, British Columbia, who gave birth between January 1999 and December 2000. We undertook a multivariate analysis to examine the associations with second- or third-trimester hemorrhage, preterm labor and delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, and perinatal death.

Early life events have important short- and long-term consequences. It is clear from previous studies that birthweight is associated with infant mortality and with childhood and adult morbidities. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between birthweight and childhood mortality.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether size-discordant twin pairs have worse perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity rates than nondiscordant pairs and whether the smaller twins of discordant pairs have worse perinatal outcomes than the larger twins.
Study Design: We conducted a population-based, retrospective analysis of linked birth certificates and fetal and infant death certificates for 9590 twin pairs who were born in the state of Washington from 1987 through 1999. The Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test, Student t test, and McNemar test were among the tests used to assess statistical significance.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the gestational age at delivery associated with the lowest rates of perinatal mortality, respiratory distress syndrome, and long hospital stays among twins, with pair rates used to account for both infants in each twin pregnancy.
Study Design: We conducted a population-based retrospective study that analyzed linked birth certificates, fetal and infant death certificates, and hospital discharge data for 8150 twin pairs born in Washington State during 1987 through 1997. The chi2 or Fisher exact test was used to assess the statistical significance.

The management of chronic or recurrent rhinosinusitis problems is multifaceted and should include consideration of contributory and potentially correctable medical and anatomic factors. To date, the relationship between allergy and rhinosinusitis has not been clearly defined. The purpose of this study is to improve understanding of the relative roles of perennial and seasonal allergens in the cause of chronic rhinosinusitis.
