COVID-19 vaccines breakthrough infection and adverse reactions in medical students: a nationwide survey in Iran.

Introduction: There are different types of COVID-19 vaccines approved worldwide. Since no national studies focus on vaccine-related adverse reactions and breakthrough cases, this study aimed to investigate the rate of adverse events and COVID-19 infection in medical students in Iran.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included Iranian medical students who received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Clinical Recovery of Spastic Finger Flexion Using Hyperselective Neurectomy: A Case Series.

Purpose: Hyperselective neurectomy (HSN) is an advanced peripheral nerve ablation procedure that can relieve spasticity and enhance the quality of life in patients with spasticity following upper motor neuron injuries. Women in Neurosurgery: Historical Path to Self-Segregation and Proposal for an Integrated Future.

Despite the rising percentage of women accessing the medical profession over the last few decades, surgical specialties are still largely male-dominated; in particular, a remarkable gender disparity is evident in neurosurgery, where only 19% of practitioners are females. Femoral nerve palsy occurs after trauma, surgical procedures and tumors and leads to loss of quadriceps functions, disability and decreased quality of life. The aim of this report was to describe a successful restoration of knee extension by transferring the anterior branch of the obturator nerve to selective branches of the femoral nerve at the thigh level. We describe a 27-year-old male who had quadriceps femoris muscle paralysis after surgical evacuation for retroperitoneal hematoma five months ago.

Nanomaterials for food packaging applications: A systematic review.

The application of nanotechnology in food packaging is widely considered during the last two decades. In this regard, numerous studies have been conducted regarding applying nanomaterials such as zinc oxide, clay, silver, carbon nanotube, titanium dioxide, and copper, and copper oxide in food packaging which were summarized in the current study. The employing of nano food packaging increases the physicochemical quality of food (color, flavor, moisture content, weight, bioavailability, and texture) and reduces the microbial load by cell-membrane function, Trojan-horse, and reactive oxygen mechanisms while they improve the barrier/mechanical properties of food packaging.

Background: In total brachial plexus injury, intercostal nerves (ICNs) are used as donor nerves to restore the elbow flexion; albeit in upper brachial plexus injury (BPI), ulnar nerve provides a source of motor axons for this purpose. The present study set out to compare the restoration of elbow flexion by using these two donor nerves.

Spontaneous Cervical Epidural Hematoma with Stroke Manifestations.

Spontaneous cervical epidural hematoma (SCEH), which is a rare disease, is manifested as by a sudden quadriplegia or paraplegia and other neurological deficits. SCEH can compress the spinal cord resulting in its clinical manifestations. The reported etiological risk factors are anticoagulants, coagulopathies, vascular malformations, infections, and herniated discs.

Double nerve transfer for restoration of hand grasp and release in C7 tetraplegia following complete cervical spinal cord injury.

Cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause tetraplegia. Nerve transfer has been routinely utilized for reconstruction of hand in brachial plexus injuries. Here, we report reconstruction of finger flexion (hand grasp) and extension (hand release) in a victim of cervical spinal cord injury with tetraplegia.

Successful recovery of sensation loss in upper brachial plexus injuries.

Objective: Injuries of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus may trigger motor and sensory deficits. There exists a growing body of literature with respect to the reconstruction of motor deficits in upper trunk brachial plexus injuries by using nerve transfers; albeit to date, very few old reports have focused on the reconstruction of sensory loss resulting from upper trunk injuries. In this case series, we review six cases (five males and one female) with upper trunk brachial plexus injuries undergoing sensory nerve transfers.

The present case is a 44-year-old man who was brought to emergency department following severe abdominal pain, but died before admission or receiving any treatments. On the autopsy, 64 bolts and metal fittings (3700 grams) were found in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine of the patient.
