Objective: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of potentially reversible non-scarring hair disorder characterized by limited patchy hair loss (alopecia areata), loss of all scalp hair (alopecia totalis), or all body hair (alopecia universalis). Several lines of treatment have been used with variable outcomes. We aimed to compare the efficacy of intralesional pentoxifylline (PTX) and triamcinolone acetonide (TRA) injection in the treatment of alopecia areata.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected global health, with the Sinopharm vaccine (an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus) showing an increase in cutaneous symptoms post-vaccination.
  • A study conducted with 4560 participants over 18 years old assessed skin reactions to the Sinopharm vaccine, finding that 26.1% experienced dermatologic complications, with common issues being induration and urticaria.
  • Despite the skin reactions being mostly mild and resolving in about 3 days on average, the study concludes that these side effects should not deter people from getting vaccinated or from receiving their second dose.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a natural short chain fatty acid containing sulfhydryl groups generated from octanoic acid and cysteine in the mitochondria, and is found in both the aqueous and lipid phases. The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of ALA supplementation in primary infertile males complaining of idiopathic asthenozoospermia. Eighty patients were randomly allocated to treatment group A (n = 40) and control group B (n = 40) groups, receiving daily doses of 600 mg (divided into two daily doses of 300 mg each) of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) or an identical placebo for 90 days.
