Introduction: Many patients required mechanical ventilation support due to severe COVID-19 pneumonia. A significant proportion of mechanically ventilated patients also required venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) due to refractory hypoxemia. A high demand for VV-ECMO support during the pandemic was challenging due to many factors, including limited resources and lack of established transfer protocols.

Recent years have witnessed multiple advancements in the field of information technology in medicine. The need to ensure patient and doctor safety during COVID-19 resulted in improved telemedicine adaptation across various fields, including anaesthesiology. In this review, the authors examine the current state of the elements of preanesthetic evaluation and their remote execution using current and future telemedical facilities and technologies, as well as the potential of future advancements in this field.

Introduction: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a modern approach to perioperative management. This study aimed to evaluate compliance with certain aspects of the ERAS protocol in malnourished and properly nourished patients undergoing elective surgery.

Material And Methods: A questionnaire study was conducted among 197 patients undergoing elective surgery at the university hospital.

Introduction: Approximately 44% of all patients hospitalised for an elective surgical procedure have a malnutrition risk. In this study, we assessed the prevalence of malnutrition risk at a pre-anaesthetic clinic and the feasibility of introducing nutritional support. The primary objective of this study was to assess malnutrition risk prevalence in patients referred to a pre-anaesthetic clinic.

Experimental studies have demonstrated that general anesthetics administered during the period of synaptogenesis may induce widespread neurodegeneration, which results in permanent cognitive and behavioral deficits. What remains to be elucidated is the extent of the potential influence of the commonly used hypnotics on comorbidities including epilepsy, which may have resulted from increased neurodegeneration during synaptogenesis. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that neuropathological changes induced by anesthetics during synaptogenesis may lead to changes in the seizure threshold during adulthood.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute pain after cesarean section (CS) is often underestimated and can negatively impact mothers and their children's well-being.
  • Regional analgesia techniques, specifically TAP block and QL block, have been studied for pain management post-CS, with some evidence favoring QL block over TAP block.
  • In a study with 197 women, no significant difference in pain intensity was found between TAPB and QLB, although patients receiving TAPB required more morphine for pain relief.

Standard dosing of caspofungin in critically ill patients has been reported to result in lower drug exposure, which can lead to subtherapeutic 24-h area under the curve to MIC (AUC/MIC) ratios. The aim of the study was to investigate the population pharmacokinetics of caspofungin in a cohort of 30 intensive care unit patients with a suspected invasive fungal infection, with a large proportion of patients requiring extracorporeal therapies, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Caspofungin was administered as empirical 70 mg antifungal therapy administered intravenously (i.

Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high mortality despite advances in the field of critical care, including growing implementation of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) support. The primary aim of this study was to present complications during transport on V-V ECMO support from regional hospitals to a tertiary center. The secondary goal was to identify initial laboratory and demographic data differentiating survivors and non-survivors.

Background: Nutrition plays a major role in intensive care unit (ICU) treatment, influencing ICU length of stay and patient's survival. If preferable enteral nutrition administration is not feasible, ESPEN and ASPEN guidelines recommend initiation of a supplemental parenteral route between the first and seventh day, but exact timing remains elusive. While rapid development in critical care enabled significant reduction in the mortality rate of ICU patients, this improvement also tripled the number of patients going to rehabilitation.

The aim of this study was to assess the adsorption of selected antibiotics: vancomycin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacine and tigecycline in an experimental continuous veno-venous hemofiltration circuit with the use of both polyethyleneimine-treated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and the polysulfone (PS) filter membranes. The crystalloid fluid dosed with one of antibiotic was pumped from a reservoir through a hemofiltration circuit (with PAN or PS membrane) and back to reservoir. All ultrafiltrate was also returned to the reservoir.

Background: Sparse data exist on the prevalence and severity of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) following cesarean section. Our study aimed to compare the effectiveness of trans abdominis plane (TAP) block and quadratus lumborum block (QLB) in the prevention of CPSP after cesarean section.

Methods: The study was conducted at a tertiary hospital from June 2017 to July 2018 as a prospective, observational trial.

Hyperbilirubinemia occurs in up to 40% of critically ill. In ICU, hyperbilirubinemia is an independent factor that influences patients' morbidity and mortality. Jaundice can reflect the course of disease or be caused by treatment (e.

Tigecycline is a glycylcycline often used in critically ill patients as the antibiotic of last resort. The pharmacokinetics (PK) of tigecycline in intensive care unit (ICU) patients can be affected by severe pathophysiological changes so that standard dosing might not be adequate. The aim of this study was to describe population PK of high-dose tigecycline in patients with sepsis or septic shock and evaluate the relationship between individual PK parameters and patient covariates.

Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate-receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is an uncommon autoimmune disorder with a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric symptoms. There is a great requirement to emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in the process of diagnosis and treatment of the potentially fatal condition, including psychiatrists, neurologists, gynaecologists and intensivists. Physicians must be aware that psychiatric and neurological disorders, which are typical features for NMDAR encephalitis in young women with ovarian tumours, may progress into status epilepticus and respiratory insufficiency.
