Background: Autologous fat transfer (AFT) is gaining popularity in breast surgery, offering a natural-looking and minimally invasive approach for augmentation, reconstruction, and contouring. However, concerns about its impact on breast cancer necessitate an understanding of the interplay between transplanted adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and the breast tissue microenvironment. Renowned for regeneration, ADSCs raise questions about their role in cancer promotion.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a disconnect between the proven effectiveness of take-home naloxone and its implementation by pharmacists, with existing barriers mapped using the COM-B model influencing this issue.
  • A participatory approach, using design-thinking principles, was employed to create a single-session implementation strategy, including key messages to address these barriers.
  • A video and infographic were produced to disseminate the strategy, with a preference for email communication and social media, emphasizing the need for innovative methods to overcome traditional consultative approaches in implementation science.

Background: There are studies demonstrating an increased expression of cyclooxygenase (COX) in keloids and hypertrophic scars, suggesting that anti-inflammatory drugs could be used in their treatment. However, a precise relationship between COX and pathological scarring has not been established in the literature yet. This study aims to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of COXs in these scars.

Background And Objectives: Trainees-medical students and residents-are an important constituency of family medicine. The Family Medicine for America's Health (FMAHealth) Workforce Education and Development (WED) Tactic Team attempted to engage trainees in FMAHealth objectives via a nationally accessible leadership development program. We discuss a how-to mechanism to develop similar models, while highlighting areas for improvement.

To disclose the mechanisms surrounding obesity, we selected microRNAs (miRNAs) that target genes involved in adipogenesis, angiogenesis, and inflammation and compared their expression levels in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of 40 obese and nonobese women. Mature miRNAs were extracted from subcutaneous adipose tissue samples that were collected during surgery and quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. miR-16 was overexpressed in the nonobese group (n-expression ratio = - 151.

Background: An allogeneic human skin graft is a temporary biologic dressing used in extensive burns that can be a providential treatment for affected patients. Skin quality depends directly on its microbial decontamination after processing in a tissue bank. Our objective was to describe the skin donor profiles in relation to the analysis of the microbial colonization of the donated skin.

Cultured mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are cells that can be used for tissue engineering or cell therapies owing to their multipotency and ability to secrete immunomodulatory and trophic molecules. Several studies suggest that MSCs can become pericytes when cocultured with endothelial cells (ECs) but failed to use pericyte markers not already expressed by MSCs. We hypothesized ECs could instruct MSCs to express the molecules CD271 or CD34, which are expressed by pericytes in situ but not by MSCs.

The gut is the largest lymphoid organ in the body. The human microbiome is composed of trillions of bacteria. The DNA of these bacteria dwarfs the human genome.

Unlabelled: Quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome in plastic surgery. However, authors use different scales to address this subject, making it difficult to compare the outcomes. To address this discrepancy, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and a random effect meta-analysis.

Quantitative real-time PCR can detect variations in gene expression. The identification of the stable reference genes (RGs) is necessary to evaluate the expression of specific genes of interest under various conditions in many cell types, including human adipose-derived stromal cells (hASCs). In this study, we used the algorithms BestKeeper, NormFinder, geNorm, and RefFinder to investigate the stability of 15 potential RGs (B2M, eEF1A1, GAPDH, H2AFZ, HMBS, HPRT1, PGK1, PPIA, RPL5, SDHA, TBP, TKT, TRFC, TUBB, and UBC) in hASCs during control, adipo-, chondro-, and osteogenic differentiation for 28 days.

Adjuvant treatment planning can change after breast cancer resection and definitive pathological examination. Radiation therapy is often chosen as a supplementary treatment. Rectus abdominis-based muscle flaps are one of the main choices when breast reconstruction plans must be changed from implant-based to autologous methods.

Purpose: To present an animal model to assess the effects of end-to-side innervation in the heterotopically transplanted model with reduced chances of neural contamination.

Methods: The medial portion of the gastrocnemius muscle in wistar male rats was isolated and its pedicle dissected and performed a flap in the abdominal portion. To prevent neural contamination in the abdominal region, the muscle was wrapped with a Goretex(r) sheet.

Purpose: To demonstrate an experimental model of up to four hours a week of independent study that allows relearning in microvascular sutures.

Methods: Wistar rats between 200 and 500 grams surplus research experiments were used. Femoral vessels are covered on one or both sides through a groin incision obliquely along the inguinal ligament.

Article Synopsis
  • Adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) are typically isolated using collagenase, but this study explored more cost-effective methods for their extraction.
  • Nine protocols, including various enzyme digestions and centrifugation, were compared based on several criteria like isolation rate and differentiation capacity.
  • The trypsin digestion method effectively maintained ASCs with similar characteristics to those isolated by collagenase but showed significantly superior osteogenic differentiation, making it a promising approach for bone tissue engineering.

Background: Correction of rectus diastasis (RD) is performed during most abdominoplasties. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term result of RD correction when the plication of the anterior rectus sheath is performed with an absorbable suture.

Methods: Abdominoplasty was performed for 12 women who presented with Nahas' type A musculoaponeurotic deformity.

Climate change, human disturbance, and disease can have large impacts on the dynamics of a species by affecting the likelihood of survival and reproduction of individuals. We investigated the roles of precipitation, off-road vehicle (ORV) alteration of habitat, and infection with Sin Nombre virus on the survival and reproductive probabilities of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). We used generalized linear mixed models to estimate the effects of these factors and their interactions by fitting capture-recapture data collected seasonally from 2002 to 2007 at 17 sites in the Great Basin Desert of central Utah, USA.

Purpose: The transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap is one of the preferential techniques used in breast reconstruction following mastectomy. Nicotine has a detrimental effect on cutaneous flap survival; although there are no experimental studies proving this effect on musculocutaneous flaps. The aim of this study is to verify the effect of nicotine on the rat TRAM flap.

The proportion of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) with recently acquired Sin Nombre virus (SNV) infections is an indicator of epizootic intensity and may be key in predicting outbreaks of hantavirus cardio-pulmonary syndrome in humans. We investigated whether incidence of recent infections was related to season, sex, reproductive status, or habitat disturbance. In May and September, 2006, we sampled 912 deer mice at six sites in Utah.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to assess, in cadavers, the resistance to medial traction of the posterior and anterior layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath.

Methods: An anatomical, prospective, self-controlled study was carried out in 20 male cadavers. An evaluation of the tension of the posterior and anterior layers of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath was performed following anatomical dissection of these structures.

Methods: Rectus diastasis was measured by ultrasonography preoperatively in 20 females.

A phase I/II trial evaluated early administration and dose escalation of interleukin (IL)-2 with granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) post-transplant. Following melphalan (200 mg/m(2)) and an autologous transplant, IL-2 was initiated (day 0) and continued for 4 weeks. GM-CSF (250 mcg/m(2)/day) began on day 5.
