Renowned for regeneration, ADSCs raise questions about their role in cancer promotion.

Immunohistochemical Expression of Cyclooxygenases in Hypertrophic Scars and Keloids.

Background: There are studies demonstrating an increased expression of cyclooxygenase (COX) in keloids and hypertrophic scars, suggesting that anti-inflammatory drugs could be used in their treatment. However, a precise relationship between COX and pathological scarring has not been established in the literature yet. This study aims to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of COXs in these scars.

Student and Resident Involvement in Family Medicine for America's Health A Step Toward Leadership Development.

Differential expression of miRNAs related to angiogenesis and adipogenesis in subcutaneous fat of obese and nonobese women.

To disclose the mechanisms surrounding obesity, we selected microRNAs (miRNAs) that target genes involved in adipogenesis, angiogenesis, and inflammation and compared their expression levels in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of 40 obese and nonobese women. Background: An allogeneic human skin graft is a temporary biologic dressing used in extensive burns that can be a providential treatment for affected patients. Skin quality depends directly on its microbial decontamination after processing in a tissue bank. Our objective was to describe the skin donor profiles in relation to the analysis of the microbial colonization of the donated skin.

Cultured mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are cells that can be used for tissue engineering or cell therapies owing to their multipotency and ability to secrete immunomodulatory and trophic molecules. Several studies suggest that MSCs can become pericytes when cocultured with endothelial cells (ECs) but failed to use pericyte markers not already expressed by MSCs. Stability of Reference Genes during Tri-Lineage Differentiation of Human Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells.

Quantitative real-time PCR can detect variations in gene expression. The identification of the stable reference genes (RGs) is necessary to evaluate the expression of specific genes of interest under various conditions in many cell types, including human adipose-derived stromal cells (hASCs). In this study, we used the algorithms BestKeeper, NormFinder, geNorm, and RefFinder to investigate the stability of 15 potential RGs (B2M, eEF1A1, GAPDH, H2AFZ, HMBS, HPRT1, PGK1, PPIA, RPL5, SDHA, TBP, TKT, TRFC, TUBB, and UBC) in hASCs during control, adipo-, chondro-, and osteogenic differentiation for 28 days.

A gastrocnemius heterotopical transplant model with end-to-side neurorraphy.

Purpose: To present an animal model to assess the effects of end-to-side innervation in the heterotopically transplanted model with reduced chances of neural contamination.

Methods: The medial portion of the gastrocnemius muscle in wistar male rats was isolated and its pedicle dissected and performed a flap in the abdominal portion. To prevent neural contamination in the abdominal region, the muscle was wrapped with a Goretex(r) sheet.

Climate change, human disturbance, and disease can have large impacts on the dynamics of a species by affecting the likelihood of survival and reproduction of individuals. We investigated the roles of precipitation, off-road vehicle (ORV) alteration of habitat, and infection with Sin Nombre virus on the survival and reproductive probabilities of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). We used generalized linear mixed models to estimate the effects of these factors and their interactions by fitting capture-recapture data collected seasonally from 2002 to 2007 at 17 sites in the Great Basin Desert of central Utah, USA.

Nicotine on rat TRAM flap.

Purpose: The transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap is one of the preferential techniques used in breast reconstruction following mastectomy. Nicotine has a detrimental effect on cutaneous flap survival; although there are no experimental studies proving this effect on musculocutaneous flaps. The aim of this study is to verify the effect of nicotine on the rat TRAM flap.

Seasonal variation in Sin Nombre virus infections in deer mice: preliminary results.

The proportion of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) with recently acquired Sin Nombre virus (SNV) infections is an indicator of epizootic intensity and may be key in predicting outbreaks of hantavirus cardio-pulmonary syndrome in humans. We investigated whether incidence of recent infections was related to season, sex, reproductive status, or habitat disturbance. In May and September, 2006, we sampled 912 deer mice at six sites in Utah.

Tensile strength of the posterior and anterior layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath in cadavers.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to assess, in cadavers, the resistance to medial traction of the posterior and anterior layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath.

Methods: An anatomical, prospective, self-controlled study was carried out in 20 male cadavers. An evaluation of the tension of the posterior and anterior layers of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath was performed following anatomical dissection of these structures.

Ultrasonography for measuring rectus abdominis muscles diastasis.

Purpose: Preoperative imaging evaluation may be useful for determining the position of recti abdominis muscles before their correction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography to measure the width of rectus abdominis muscle diastasis.

Methods: Rectus diastasis was measured by ultrasonography preoperatively in 20 females.
