In people with known cardiac disease or risk factors for cardiac disease, assisted conception may carry increased risks during treatment and any subsequent pregnancy. These risks should be assessed, considered and minimized prior to treatment.

The increased sensitivity of microelectrode arrays (MEAs) over macroelectrodes for biosensing is well established, and results from reducing the diffusion gradient of the target species to and from the electrode surfaces. The current study describes the fabrication and characterisation of a polymer-based MEA, which exploits the advantages of three dimensionality (3D). Firstly, the unique 3D formfactor promotes release of the gold tips from an inert layer in a controlled fashion, to form a highly reproducible array of microelectrodes in a single step.

Sickle cell disease is a multisystem disease characterised by chronic haemolytic anaemia, painful vaso-occlusive crises and acute and chronic end-organ damage. It is one of the most common serious inherited single gene conditions worldwide and has a major impact on the health of affected individuals. Peri-operative complications are higher in patients with sickle cell disease compared with the general population and may be sickle or non-sickle-related.

Introduction: Colonic stent insertion has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with acute large bowel obstruction, either as a bridge to surgery or as definitive treatment. However, little is known of the role of secondary stent insertion following primary stent failure in patients considered inappropriate or high risk for emergency surgery.

The intraerythrocytic parasite is the number 1 cause of transfusion-transmitted infection and can induce serious, often life-threatening complications in immunocompromised individuals including transfusion-dependent patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite the existence of strong long-lasting immunological protection against a second infection in mouse models, little is known about the cell types or the kinetics of protective adaptive immunity mounted following infection, especially in infection-prone SCD that are thought to have an impaired immune system. Here, we show, using a mouse infection model, that infected wild-type (WT) mice mount a very strong adaptive immune response, characterized by (1) coordinated induction of a robust germinal center (GC) reaction; (2) development of follicular helper T (T) cells that comprise ∼30% of splenic CD4 T cells at peak expansion by 10 days postinfection; and (3) high levels of effector T-cell cytokines, including interleukin 21 and interferon γ, with an increase in the secretion of antigen (Ag)-specific antibodies (Abs).

Human babesiosis is an emerging tick-borne parasitic disease and blood transfusion-transmitted infection primarily caused by the apicomplexan parasite, Babesia microti. There is no licensed vaccine for B. microti and the development of a reliable serological screening test would contribute to ensuring the safety of the donated blood supply.

Background: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) can be exacerbated by haemostatic failure. Based on data from trauma studies, empirical infusions of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) are often given during severe PPH if coagulation tests are unavailable. This study observed a cohort of women with moderate/severe PPH in whom FFP infusion was guided by the use of viscoelastometric point-of-care testing (VE-POCT) and clinical assessment.

Introduction: A clear cell sarcoma-like gastrointestinal tumour (CCSLGT) is a rare malignant soft tissue sarcoma. In the literature, they are sometimes referred to as malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumours, clear cell sarcomas or osteoclast rich tumours of the gastrointestinal tract.

Background: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a major cause of maternal morbidity. Bleeding is caused by a combination of physical causes, such as failure of the uterus to contract or operations, and is made worse by impairment of the blood clotting system. A number of studies have shown that low levels of the blood clotting factor fibrinogen are associated with progression of bleeding, the need for invasive interventions and transfusions of red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
