Occult hepatitis C virus infection in hemodialysis patients who achieved a sustained virological response to directly acting antiviral drugs: is it a concern?

Purpose: Hepatitis C virus infection is a major health problem in hemodialysis patients. Occult HCV infection is defined as the presence of HCV-RNA in hepatocytes or peripheral blood mononuclear cells without the detection of HCV-RNA in the serum. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and predictors of occult HCV infection among hemodialysis patients after treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents.

Syrians' awareness of cardiovascular disease risk factors and warning indicators: a descriptive cross-sectional study.

The awareness of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) contributes to the complications and fatality rates from these diseases among individuals; however, no previous study in Syria was conducted on this topic; thus, this study aims to assess Syrians' awareness of CVDs warning symptoms and risk factors. This online cross-sectional study was performed in Syria between the 1st and 25th of August 2022. The inclusion criteria for the sample were citizens of Syria over 18 who currently reside in Syria.

Caffeine addiction and determinants of caffeine consumption among health care providers: a descriptive national study.

Objective: Caffeine is the most commonly used psychostimulant compound with a long history of worldwide consumption. Consuming low to moderate doses of caffeine is generally safe and quite beneficial; however, several clinical studies show that high doses could be toxic.  Additionally, caffeine users can become dependent on the drug and find themselves unable to reduce consumption despite impending and recurrent health problems associated with continued use.

Applying novel economic simple green sample preparation procedures on natural and industrial specimens for chromatographic determination of insecticidal residues.

Spraying a tertiary blend of the insecticides (hexythiazox, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam), on tomato fruits, is a routine in agriculture-attentive countries. A simple green sample preparation technique was developed and applied to the field samples. Specific HP-TLC and RP-HPLC methodologies are established to estimate the residual insecticides and applied to the prepared field specimens.

Pathway to global elimination of hepatitis B: HBV cure is just the first step.

Hepatitis B (HBV) is a major cause of global morbidity and mortality, and the leading cause of liver cancer worldwide. Significant advances have recently been made toward the development of a finite HBV treatment that achieves permanent loss of HBsAg and HBV DNA (so-called "HBV cure"), which could provide the means to eliminate HBV as a public health threat. However, the HBV cure is just one step toward achieving WHO HBV elimination targets by 2030, and much work must be done now to prepare for the successful implementation of the HBV cure.

Outcome measures in childhood glaucoma: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

Monkeypox Post-COVID-19: Knowledge, Worrying, and Vaccine Adoption in the Arabic General Population.

Background: The outbreak of monkeypox was declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization on 23 July 2022. There have been 60,000 cases reported worldwide, most of which are in places where monkeypox has never been seen due to the travel of people who have the virus. This research aims to evaluate the general Arabic population in regard to the monkeypox disease, fears, and vaccine adoption after the WHO proclaimed a monkeypox epidemic and to compare these attitudes to those of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chip Formation and Orthogonal Cutting Optimisation of Unidirectional Carbon Fibre Composites.

This study presents a thorough experimental investigation utilising the design of experiments and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine the impact of machining process parameters on chip formation mechanisms, machining forces, workpiece surface integrity, and damage resulting from the orthogonal cutting of unidirectional CFRP. The study identified the mechanisms behind chip formation and found it to significantly impact the workpiece orientation of fibre and the tool's cutting angle, resulting in increased fibre bounceback at larger fibre orientation angles and when using smaller rake angle tools. Increasing the depth of cut and fibre orientation angle results in an increased damage depth, while using higher rake angles reduces it.

Effect of different chelating agents on the shear bond strength of calcium silicate-based cements to coronal dentin.

We evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine (BD) to coronal dentin after treatment with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), phytic acid (IP6), or etidronic acid (HEDP). Sodium hypochlorite-treated dentin surfaces were randomly divided into four groups according to conditioning protocol namely, 17% EDTA, 2.5% IP6, 9% HEDP, or distilled water (DS).

Percutaneous Closure of Post-infarct Left Ventricular Pseudoaneurysm: A Review of Literature.

Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm is a well-known complication of myocardial infarction and open-heart surgery and has recently been described as succeeding transapical transcatheter aortic valve replacement. While surgical intervention is the conventional therapeutic approach, transcatheter closure can be considered in patients at high risk for surgical procedures. In this article, we present a postmyocardial infarction pseudoaneurysm for which closure was done via retrograde left ventricular access using an Amplatzer Septal Occluder, and provide a review of recent literature focusing on indications and outcomes of the different percutaneous techniques and devices.

The state of cancer research in fragile and conflict-affected settings in the Middle East and North Africa Region: A bibliometric analysis.

Background: Cancer represents a disproportionate burden in LMICs, especially conflict-affected countries in the MENA region. Research output on cancer fails to match the growing burden in the region. This bibliometric study aims to examine the status and trends of cancer research in fragile and conflict-affected settings in the MENA region from 2000 to 2021, while also incorporating economic and demographic indicators as additional factors of analysis.
