Automatic Classification of Nodules from 2D Ultrasound Images Using Deep Learning Networks.

Objective: In clinical practice, thyroid nodules are typically visually evaluated by expert physicians using 2D ultrasound images. Based on their assessment, a fine needle aspiration (FNA) may be recommended. However, visually classifying thyroid nodules from ultrasound images may lead to unnecessary fine needle aspirations for patients.

Personality types in individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Objective: The Type A personality, characterized by impatience, strong career ambition and competitiveness, is associated with greater sensitivity to external stress. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an auto-immune disease, which is potentially influenced by stress, unlike type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aim of this study was to assess whether individuals with T1D and T2D exhibited significant differences on the Type A personality scale.

Characteristics of diabetic patients and diabetes care in cardiac rehabilitation.

Background: Although diabetes is associated with a high cardiovascular risk, very little information is available about diabetic patients enrolled in cardiac rehabilitation (CR).

Aims: To analyse the characteristics of diabetic patients and diabetes care in CR.

Methods: From the database of 700 patients enrolled in CR during a 29-month period, we analysed data from all patients with glucose metabolism disorders (n=105) and 210 matched normoglycaemic patients.

Circulating apelin is increased in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and is associated with better glycaemic control.

Context: Apelin is an adipokine expressed in several tissues and it appears to be involved in energy metabolism.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine serum apelin levels in a large cohort of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and control subjects and to correlate the results with glycaemic control.

Design And Participants: One hundred and thirty patients with type 1 diabetes, 98 patients with type 2 diabetes and 162 controls were enrolled in the study.

Impact of liver disease severity and etiology on the occurrence of diabetes mellitus in patients with liver cirrhosis.

The association between liver cirrhosis (LC) and diabetes mellitus (DM) is well known. However, the impact of the severity or etiology of LC on the occurrence of DM is relatively unknown. We aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical correlates of DM in a large cohort of patients with cirrhosis.

Impact on overall survival of radioactive iodine in low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer patients.

Context: American Thyroid Association and European Thyroid Association guidelines cannot recommend for or against radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation after surgery in low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to assess the survival benefit of RAI for these patients.

Design: We identified 1298 DTC patients at low risk treated between 1975 and 2005.
