An attempt was made to explain the unusual clinical manifestations at the example of an observation of a spinal-marrow tumor, which had the neurological lesion symptoms only below the upper-thoracic level. Scoliosis with a minor spinal deformation at the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra was a tumor symptom. It is suggested that the spinal scoliosis, having a mechanical impact on the spinal marrow and on its provision with blood in the minor-deformation location, was the reason of impaired sensitivity and movements, which is indicative of the spinal-marrow lesion not only in the mentioned locations but also in the total length of tumor localization.

Marked arteriovenous malformation in the left parietooccipital area manifested only by symptoms of associative migraine involving changes of visual fields indicative of impaired functions of symmetrical compartments of the other brain hemisphere. Visual evoked potentials were changed in this patient because of dysfunction of both hemispheres and largely because of disorders in brain structures symmetrical to the site of arteriovenous malformation. This can be regarded as a manifestation of the so-called stealing phenomenon, when blood supply to one brain compartment is decreased because of excessive blood delivery to other regions of the brain.

Quality of voice after treatment for T1A glottic squamous cell carcinoma was studied in two matched groups of males treated either with CO2 laser cordectomi (n = 18, mean age 65.2 years) or with full dose radiotherapy (n = 18, mean age 65.1 years).

The results of the method application in neuropathology are outlined.

Involuntary movements of the pelvis and legs which accompany voluntary arm flexion and correct the orthograde posture start in most trials in normal subjects simultaneously with the voluntary arm movement or later was demonstrated. At the same time bursts of legs and trunk muscles activity anticipate the burst of m.deltoideus activity.

Marked cicatricial mucosal inflammation prevented a definitive pathologic diagnosis of recurrence until a nodule grew to obstruct the airway 15 years after initial surgery. After excision of the nodule, a larger sarcomatous metastasis was discovered in the upper esophagus and resected, but the patient eventually succumbed to widespread disease at the age of 20 years.

Six to 12 months after the operation, the serum level of growth hormone (GH) was reduced to less than 5 micrograms l-1 in 28 patients (74%) in at least two of three random samples and/or suppressed to less than 3 micrograms l-1 during an oral glucose load, thus fulfilling the commonly used criteria for a successful operation. In 10 patients these criteria for adequate GH reduction were not fulfilled, but their median S-GH level was reduced from 38 to 11 micrograms l-1 (P less than 0.

The induction chemotherapy consisted of 3 courses of cisplatin (100 mg/m2) and a subsequent 120-h infusion of 5-fluorouracil (1,000 mg/m2/24 h) repeated every 3 weeks. It was followed by radiotherapy to a median target dose of 66 Gy and surgery for residual tumour.

This article deals with a 32-yr-old male who suffered from pain and swelling in the right temporomandibular joint region associated with restricted mouth opening. Computed tomography showed a tumor lateral to the temporomandibular joint.

Culture of esophageal brushings confirmed the presence of Candida albicans in eight of these 11 patients. Antimycotic treatment decreased the cineradiographic signs of candidiasis and the degree of dysphagia.

Postural adjustments associated with deep respiratory movements were disturbed in patients with lesions of mainly posterior part of the inferior convolution of the frontal lobe. Postural adjustments associated with arm elevation were disturbed in patients with lesions of mainly the posterior part of the superior frontal convolution corresponding to the supplementary motor area.

A series of 31 glottic T1 tumours, 18 T1A and 13 T1S, treated endoscopically by carbon dioxide laser surgery is presented. There were 3 recurrences in each group which were successfully treated by repeated laser surgery or radiotherapy. A comparison of the quality of the voice with T1A tumours primarily treated by radiotherapy using a GRBAS score is made.

The authors describe tremor of the left limbs, that differs from the known types of tremor. The patient developed it concurrently with the symptoms of meningioma of the anterior part of the falciform process in the presence of residual phenomena after removal of the lateral ventricle tumor. The pathophysiological mechanisms of this unusual tremor generation are discussed.

The allergic reaction in the nasal mucosa is a complex pathophysiological process with several chemical mediators involved. One of the primary mediators is histamine. This investigation was performed to study separately the effects of an allergic reaction and of histamine on the human nasal mucosal blood flow with the 133Xe wash-out method.

In 67 patients with local verified cerebral lesions, the activity of leg and trunk muscles was studied in involuntary movements of the arm in the usual vertical position. Forty-one of them showed some symptoms of primary or secondary dysfunctions of brain structures. On the basis of the present and previous studies, a conclusion was drawn that synergy associated with involuntary movements in the vertical position of man is impaired both in the local lesion of the additional motor portion and when damage to other portions of the frontal lobe is combined with an impairment of the brain stem.
