Water is an essential resource for dairy cows, and its consumption is closely linked to feed intake. Social competition can lead to changes in drinking behavior, especially for subordinate cows. We studied how changes in stocking density at the feeder (1 or 2 cows per feeder), and drinker (6 or 12 cows per drinker) and a temporal feed restriction (14- or 24-h access) affects drinking in 4 groups of 6 cows each, following a Latin square design.

In the face of change: Which coping strategies predict better psychosocial outcomes in face transplant recipients?

Objectives: Face transplantation aims to improve patients' quality of life and psychosocial functioning in patients with a disfiguring injury. With 40 cases worldwide, little is known about coping strategies predicting resilient outcomes.

Design: Six patients followed in Boston, completed the Brief COPE (Carver, 1997) along with validated measures of depression, self-esteem, and quality of life - every 3 months during the first year post-transplant and every 6 months thereafter, up to 36 months post-transplant.

A target question for the scientific study of consciousness is how dimensions of consciousness, such as the ability to feel pain and pleasure or reflect on one's own experience, vary in different states and animal species. Considering the tight link between consciousness and moral status, answers to these questions have implications for law and ethics. Here we point out that given this link, the scientific community studying consciousness may face implicit pressure to carry out certain research programs or interpret results in ways that justify current norms rather than challenge them.

Chronic kidney disease involves disturbances in iron metabolism including anemia caused by insufficient erythropoietin (EPO) production. However, underlying mechanisms responsible for the dysregulation of cellular iron metabolism are incompletely defined. Using the unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model in and mice, we asked if iron regulatory proteins (IRPs), the central regulators of cellular iron metabolism and suppressors of EPO production, contribute to the etiology of anemia in kidney failure.

The present article describes the decommissioning of a self-shielded 18 MeV medical cyclotron IBA Cyclone 18/9 after 14 years of operation. A Monte Carlo simulation of the possible nuclear reactions was performed in order to plan the decommissioning activities. During the cyclotron dismantling, the activities of the cyclotron components, concrete wall and floor samples were measured.

Full facial retransplantation in a female patient-Technical, immunologic, and clinical considerations.

There is limited experience with facial retransplantation (fRT). We report on the management of facial retransplantation in a facial vascularized composite allotransplant recipient following irreversible allograft loss 88 months after the first transplant. Chronic antibody-mediated rejection and recurrent cellular rejection resulted in a deteriorated first allograft and the patient underwent retransplantation.

Background: Sirolimus is an immunosuppressive agent used in organ rejection prophylaxis in solid-organ transplantation, graft-vs-host disease prophylaxis in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and as an immune modulator for patients with lymphangioleiomyomatosis and vascular malformations. Sirolimus has a narrow therapeutic index with potential severe side effects, including hypertension, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and neurotoxicity.

Case Report: We report a case of a 19-year-old woman with severe sickle cell disease who underwent a matched unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, whose course was complicated by sirolimus toxicity.

Use of dual lumen ports for red blood cell exchange: A comparison of adults and children with sickle cell disease.

Purpose: Sickle cell patients receiving chronic RBC exchange require a form of long-term central venous access if peripheral access is inadequate. In adults, dual lumen (DL) ports have been utilized but associated with greater procedure complications and duration when compared to other forms of access. In the current study, we used qualitative coding methods to investigate which aspects of the sense of self differed between those with and without CG in a sample of 77 bereaved adults.

Successful treatment of severe refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia after hematopoietic stem cell transplant with abatacept.

Background: After hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a known and fairly common complication. It is often refractory to conventional therapies including corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, splenectomy, and the more recently described use of monoclonal antibodies. The high morbidity associated with these severe persistent cases elucidates the gaps in alternative therapies available for treatment.

A 10-year-old boy presented with spontaneous bruising and was found to have extreme thrombocytosis without neutrophilia/shift to immaturity, basophilia or eosinophilia. While the peripheral blood and bone marrow findings initially suggested essential thrombocythemia, BCR-ABL1 translocation was detected and chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic phase, was diagnosed. Apheresis for platelet depletion was performed as a bridge given the delayed effects of medical therapy.
