As a result of potential profits that can be made from ABA services, for-profit organizations have become more common in the field. One type of for-profit organization that has become especially prominent in the ABA service industry is private equity (PE)-owned ABA companies.

Choice versus no choice: Practical considerations for increasing choices.

Choice involves engaging in a selection response when multiple options are concurrently available. Choices can be incorporated into many components of behavior-analytic treatment such as providing clients with a choice between multiple items, activities, or tasks. We reviewed the main characteristics of 38 behavior-analytic articles that compared choice and no-choice conditions.

Human Rabies - Texas, 2021.

In late August 2021, a boy aged 7 years was bitten by a bat while he was playing outside his apartment home in Medina County, Texas. He informed his parents; however, no rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) was sought because there were no visible bite marks, and the family was unaware that contact with a bat, including in the absence of visible bite marks, might cause rabies. Approximately 2 months later, the child was hospitalized for altered mental status, seizures, and hypersalivation and ultimately received a diagnosis of rabies.

Evaluation of an Intensive Program for Children With Co-occurring Medical and Emotional Disorders.

The study objective was to assess clinical outcomes and cost avoidance of an intensive day treatment program for children with co-occurring chronic medical disease and emotional problems. Intensive day treatment programs for this population are uncommon, and their effectiveness has not been previously reported. A total of 175 children were enrolled during the 3-year study period.

Isavuconazole: Mechanism of Action, Clinical Efficacy, and Resistance.

Increasing incidence of invasive fungal infections combined with a growing population of immunocompromised hosts has created a rising need for antifungal agents. Isavuconazole, a second-generation broad-spectrum triazole with activity against yeasts, dimorphic fungi, and molds, has a favorable safety profile and predictable pharmacokinetics. Patients typically tolerate isavuconazole well with fewer drug-drug interactions.

Reprocessing N95s with hydrogen peroxide vaporization: A robust system from collection to dispensing.

The SARS-CoV2 pandemic has created extreme shortages of N95 mask necessitating the need for rapid development of reuse and reprocessing plans. Our aim was to create a process to recapture, reprocess, and redistribute N95 masks using hydrogen peroxide vapor as a real time disinfection method within a large hospital system. We were able to recapture and reprocess 29, 706 N95 masks using hydrogen peroxide vapor with approximately 25% loss due to damage.

COVID-19 and Nurse-Sensitive Indicators: Using Performance Improvement Teams to Address Quality Indicators During a Pandemic.

Background: Nurse-sensitive quality indicators have historically been used as a metric of nursing care quality in health care organizations.

Problem: At our academic medical center, critically ill COVID-19 patients led to a dramatic change in the organizational standard of care resulting in an increase in nurse-sensitive health care-associated infections.

Approach: Nursing performance improvement teams provided the structure for development of innovative strategies implemented in real time by our frontline clinicians to address the quality and safety issues found with these elevated health care-associated infections.

Qualitative process evaluation of a central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) prevention team in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Background: A central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is a serious complication. Patients in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at increased risk for CLABSI, and hospitals often implement patient safety initiatives to prevent them. Studies have quantitatively demonstrated that line teams can reduce the rate of CLABSI.

Universal Electrocardiographic Screening for Long QT Syndrome in Hospitalized Neonates.

Objective: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a known cause of unexpected death, leading some to recommend routine neonatal electrocardiographic (ECG) screening. We used continuous electronic heart rate corrected QT interval (QTc) monitoring to screen for interval prolongation in a cohort of hospitalized neonates to identify those at a risk of having LQTS. We hypothesized that this screening method would yield an acceptable positive predictive value (PPV).

Association of Early Inhaled Nitric Oxide With the Survival of Preterm Neonates With Pulmonary Hypoplasia.

Importance: Pulmonary hypoplasia affects a very small percentage of preterm neonates, but its presence is associated with high rates of mortality.

Objective: To determine whether treatment with inhaled nitric oxide during the first week of life was associated with improved in-hospital survival in a cohort of extremely preterm neonates with pulmonary hypoplasia.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study used data from the Pediatrix Medical Group's Clinical Data Warehouse, a data set containing information from more than 350 neonatal intensive care units in 35 US states and Puerto Rico.

Does Red Blood Cell Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury Occur in Premature Infants? A Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

 The objective of this study was to determine whether packed red blood cell (pRBC) transfusions in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants were associated with acute respiratory decompensation (ARD).  Retrospective chart review of ELBW infant pRBC transfusions analyzed for meeting ARD criteria during the 6 hours post-pRBC transfusion was compared with the pretransfusion baseline period. A control period subdivided into similar pre- and postintervals was also assessed for each infant.

An appraisal of published usability evaluations of electronic health records via systematic review.

Objective: In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate methodological and reporting trends present in the current literature by investigating published usability studies of electronic health records (EHRs).

Methods: A literature search was conducted for articles published through January 2015 using MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science, supplemented by citation and reference list reviews. Studies were included if they tested the usability of hospital and clinic EHR systems in the inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, or operating room setting.

Health Behavior Theory in Popular Calorie Counting Apps: A Content Analysis.

Background: Although the Health & Fitness category of the Apple App Store features hundreds of calorie counting apps, the extent to which popular calorie counting apps include health behavior theory is unknown.

Objective: This study evaluates the presence of health behavior theory in calorie counting apps.

Methods: Data for this study came from an extensive content analysis of the 10 most popular calorie counting apps in the Health & Fitness category of the Apple App Store.
