Background: Blood culture contaminants can lead to inappropriate antibiotic use, prolonged length of stay, and additional hospital costs. Several devices have been developed to reduce the risk of blood culture contamination by diverting a portion of the initial blood sample from the blood culture bottle. We assessed the effectiveness of 1 blood diversion device (BDD) in a prospective trial performed at the 2 separate emergency departments (EDs) of an academic medical center.

Systemic ketamine toxicity following dermal application of a compounded pain cream.

Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist commonly used as a dissociative anesthetic and analgesic. Though it is conventionally administered via the intravenous, intramuscular, or intranasal route, use as a compounded analgesic cream is becoming increasingly common. This is a case report of a 61-year-old man who was detained by the police for erratic driving.

Assessing multidimensional fidelity in a pilot optimization trial: A process evaluation of four intervention components supporting medication adherence in women with breast cancer.

Adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy in women with breast cancer is low. We conducted a 24-1 fractional factorial pilot optimization trial to test four intervention components supporting medication adherence [text messages, information leaflet, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), self-management website], in the preparation phase of the multiphase optimization strategy. Guided by the National Institute of Health Behavior Change Consortium fidelity framework, we investigated fidelity of design, training, delivery, receipt, and enactment of four intervention components.

Objective: Non-adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) in women with breast cancer is common and associated with medication side-effects and distress. We co-designed an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy intervention (ACTION) to enhance medication decision-making and quality of life (QoL). We undertook a pilot trial of ACTION to inform the feasibility of a phase III trial, and to examine intervention acceptability.

Neuropsychological assessment, intervention, and best practices for women with non-Central nervous system cancer: A scoping review of current standards.

Existing literature has sought to characterize the broad cognitive impact of non-central nervous system cancer and its treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and hormonal regulation. However, despite the frequency of women that are diagnosed with breast and gynecological cancer, there is limited research on the specific cognitive experiences of women undergoing cancer treatment. Presently, the current literature lacks concise guidance for neuropsychologists to support the cognitive health of women facing cancer, despite the acknowledged impact of cancer interventions and chronic illness on cognitive outcomes.

Representation of women in neuropsychology research prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: Prior work has demonstrated that women have been historically underrepresented across various research fields, including neuropsychology. Given these disparities, the goal of this study was to systematically evaluate the inclusion of women as participants in neuropsychology research. The current study builds upon previous research by examining articles from eight peer-reviewed neuropsychology journals published in 2019.

During development, inflammation or tissue injury, macrophages may successively engulf and process multiple apoptotic corpses via efferocytosis to achieve tissue homeostasis. How macrophages may rapidly adapt their transcription to achieve continuous corpse uptake is incompletely understood. Transcriptional pause/release is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism, in which RNA polymerase (Pol) II initiates transcription for 20-60 nucleotides, is paused for minutes to hours and is then released to make full-length mRNA.

The Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Symptom and Performance Validity Tests Among a Multiracial Sample Presenting for ADHD Evaluation.

Objective: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are commonly reported in individuals presenting for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) evaluation. Performance validity tests (PVTs) and symptom validity tests (SVTs) are essential to ADHD evaluations in young adults, but extant research suggests that those who report ACEs may be inaccurately classified as invalid on these measures. The current study aimed to assess the degree to which ACE exposure differentiated PVT and SVT performance and ADHD symptom reporting in a multi-racial sample of adults presenting for ADHD evaluation.

Background: The Refining and Optimising a behavioural intervention to Support Endocrine Therapy Adherence (ROSETA) programme has developed four intervention components aiming to improve medication adherence in women with early-stage breast cancer. These are (a) text messages, (b) information leaflet, (c) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based guided self-help (ACT), (d) side-effect management website. Guided by the Multiphase Optimisation Strategy, our pilot trial will use a fractional factorial design to evaluate the feasibility of undertaking a larger optimisation trial.

Association of potato consumption with calcified atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries: The NHLBI Family Heart Study.

Background And Aims: While the association of potato consumption with risk factors for coronary artery disease has been inconsistent, no data are available in the literature on the influence of potato consumption on subclinical disease. Thus, we sought to examine whether baked/mashed potato consumption is associated with calcified atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries.

Methods And Results: In a cross-sectional design, we studied 2208 participants of the NHLBI Family Heart Study.

Parental, caregiving, and family leave during clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral training: Recommendations and guidelines from the Women in Neuropsychology (WIN) committee and Education Advisory Committee (EAC) of the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (SCN; APA division 40).

Parental and other caregiving leave is important to postdoctoral fellows, yet there is no field-wide recommendation for leave policies among clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral training programs, which is of particular relevance given the two-year requirement for eligibility for board certification. The aims of this manuscript are to (a) discuss general guidelines and recommendations for leave policies, both informed by prior empirical evidence as well as relevant existing policy guidelines from various academic and healthcare organizations, and (b) use vignettes to provide possible solutions for potential leave scenarios. A critical review of literature on family leave from public policy and political science, industrial-organizational psychology, academic medicine, and psychology was conducted and findings were synthesized.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Given the critical roles of the immune system and inflammatory signals in the pathogenesis of CVD, we hypothesized that interrogation of CVD-related proteins using integrative genomics might provide new insights into the pathophysiology of RA. We utilized two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) for causal inference between circulating protein levels and RA by incorporating genetic variants, followed by colocalization to characterize the causal associations.

Profound Hyperthermia Associated With Fentanyl and Cocaine Use With Suspected Synephrine Adulteration.

Background: Although hyperthermia is described after cocaine intoxication, the two hyperthermic cases discussed were unusual in severity and duration for cocaine alone. Synephrine was found in biological samples of these patients in high concentrations and was suspected to be an adulterant in illicitly obtained drugs.

Case Report: Two patients presented to a tertiary care university hospital within 2 days of each other after recreational drug use with delayed and protracted hyperthermia.

Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol Exposure and Confirmation in Four Pediatric Patients.

Introduction: Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a known isomer of delta-9-THC, both found naturally in the Cannabis sativa plant and thought to have similar potency. Delta-8-THC products are widely accessible in retail shops which may lead to a rise in pediatric exposures with substantial clinical effects.

Case Report: This is a case series of four pediatric patients that were seen between June and September 2021.

Our bodies turn over billions of cells daily via apoptosis and are in turn cleared by phagocytes via the process of "efferocytosis." Defects in efferocytosis are now linked to various inflammatory diseases. Here, we designed a strategy to boost efferocytosis, denoted "chimeric receptor for efferocytosis" (CHEF).

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) continue to make up a significant portion new psychoactive substances (NPS) detected and seized worldwide. Due to their often potent activation of central cannabinoid receptors , use of SCRAs can result in severe intoxication, in addition to other adverse health effects. Recent detections of AB-4CN-BUTICA, MMB-4CN-BUTINACA, MDMB-4F-BUTICA and MDMB-4F-BUTINACA mark a continuation in the appearance of SCRAs bearing novel tail substituents.

Mentoring in neuropsychology: How theory and practice can support diverse mentees.

The academic literature on mentoring is well established, with a large body of published "best practices" regarding mentoring outside of neuropsychology. Specific attention is given to the need to diversify mentors, mentoring practices, and giving voice to a new generation of academics and practitioners through the mentoring process. Still, the field of neuropsychology has much to learn and implement consistently in practice from this well-established literature base and trove of resources and best practices.
