Submucosal Duodenal Artery Pseudoaneurysm Causing Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage: A Case Report.

Introduction: Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a common emergency presentation. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2018 survey of emergency department (ED) visits reported 436,000 ED visits for unspecified gastrointestinal bleeding that year.

Case Report: We present the case of a submucosal duodenal pseudoaneurysm causing massive gastro-intestinal hemorrhage in a male on anticoagulation.

The critical need for WASH in emergency preparedness in health settings, the case of COVID-19 pandemic in Kisumu Kenya.

The devastating effects of inadequate basic utilities such as water, sanitation, hygiene, waste management and environmental cleaning (WASH) is underscored by the current global pandemic declared on March 11, 2020. This paper explores the experiences of key informants (n = 15) ie government and non-government organization officials on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in health care facilities (HCFs) and the role of WASH in emergency preparedness in health settings and the communities they serve using Kisumu, Kenya as a case study. The results from interviews with the key informants indicate socioecological challenges shaping access to hygiene services in HCFs and related disparities in social determinants of health such as WASH that serve as barriers to the pandemic response.

The need to focus on immunology education has never been greater. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has revealed that a significant proportion of our society is vaccine hesitant. Some of this hesitancy may stem from a general lack of understanding of how the immune system and immunological interventions work.

Background: Synthetic cathinones currently represent one of the most predominant (sub)-classes of new psychoactive substance (NPS) in illicit drug markets. Despite the increased concerns caused by the constant introduction of new analogues, these drugs are not commonly assayed in routine drug testing procedures and may not be detected in standard screening procedures. This study presents a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the detection and quantification of 16 synthetic cathinones and 10 metabolites in human urine.

Evaluating a Novel Extended Scope of Occupational Therapy Service Aimed at Hospital Avoidance in Tasmania, Australia, from the Perspective of Stakeholders.

The Australian state of Tasmania has seen a spike in Emergency Department presentations in recent years, particularly among the elderly. A novel extended scope occupational therapy (ESOT) service was implemented by the Tasmanian Health Service, aimed at supporting hospital avoidance. Clients were referred to the ESOT service by other services after being assessed as having a high risk of imminent hospital presentation.

Headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) is a promising technique for the characterisation and profiling of gunshot exhausts in spent cartridge casings, especially for health and environmental risk assessments, as well as forensic purposes. To date, however, no comprehensive investigation has been carried out to objectively assess the kinds of compound released during a discharge that can be recovered by this approach, the selectivity of the main commercially available fibres, and their relative performances for the analysis of gunshot exhausts and the discrimination of different ammunition types. This study aimed to fill this gap.

A Drug-Coated Balloon Treatment for Urethral Stricture Disease: Three-Year Results from the ROBUST I Study.

Introduction: Endoscopic management of male anterior urethral stricture disease is common; however, repeat treatment is associated with high recurrence rates. Here, we report the 3-year results of the ROBUST I trial, which evaluated the safety and efficacy of the Optilume drug coated balloon (DCB) in men with recurrent urethral strictures.

Methods: Adult men with recurrent bulbar urethral strictures ≤2 cm in length and 1-4 prior endoscopic interventions were treated with the Optilume DCB.

Little is understood about the unintended consequences of cannabis liberalization on children. Subsequently, this scoping review aimed to map and identify evidence related to acute cannabis intoxication in children. We searched three medical literature databases from inception until October 2019.

Economic burden of food allergy in Canada: Estimating costs and identifying determinants.

Background: Limited data exist on the economic burden of food allergy (FA).

Objective: To assess FA-related direct (healthcare and out-of-pocket) and indirect (lost productivity) costs and their determinants in Canadian children and adults self-reporting FA.

Methods: FA-individuals self-reporting a convincing history or physician diagnosis were recruited through FA registries, an anaphylaxis registry, and advocacy associations, and electronically surveyed regarding FA-related healthcare use, out-of-pocket expenditures, and time lost from paid and unpaid labor.

Mononuclear non-heme iron enzymes are a large class of enzymes catalyzing a wide-range of reactions. In this work, we report that a non-heme iron enzyme in , OvoA has two different activities, as a thiol oxygenase and a sulfoxide synthase. When cysteine is presented as the only substrate, OvoA is a thiol oxygenase.

The stem cell hypothesis suggests that there is a small group of malignant cells, the cancer stem cells, that initiate the development of tumors, encourage its growth, and may even be the cause of metastases. Patient-level interventions to reduce alcohol-related harms in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-summary.

Background: Disease and disability from alcohol use disproportionately impact people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While varied interventions have been shown to reduce alcohol use in high-income countries, their efficacy in LMICs has not been assessed. This systematic review describes current published literature on patient-level alcohol interventions in LMICs and specifically describes clinical trials evaluating interventions to reduce alcohol use in LMICs.

Adapting Child Health Knowledge Translation Tools for Somali Parents: Qualitative Study Exploring Process Considerations and Stakeholder Engagement.

Background: We have developed a series of knowledge translation (KT) tools that integrate parental experiences to communicate evidence-based information about acute childhood health conditions to parents and caregivers. While we created these tools with parent input, it is unclear if they are useful for diverse parent groups, including specific immigrant and refugee groups in Canada.

Objective: This study aims to explore the usefulness of our preexisting KT tools within our local Somali community, and understand what cultural and linguistic adaptations could improve their usability.

Survivors' Concerns During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Qualitative Insights From the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of stay-at-home orders in March 2020, experts warned of the possible threat of increased interpersonal violence among individuals isolated with abusers. Researchers have sought to understand how the pandemic impacted victims primarily through the analysis of administrative data sources, such as hospital and police records. However, the preponderance of this data shows a decrease in formal help-seeking among victims during the pandemic, speaking to an impaired access to services but limiting our understanding of other ways in which the pandemic has affected survivors.

Background: A number of evidence-based knowledge translation (KT) tools for parents of children with acute health conditions have been developed. These tools were created and tested with parental input and disseminated to groups proficient in English. Therefore, it is unclear whether they are useful for populations that are more diverse.

Multi-Informant Assessment of Adolescents' Social-Emotional Skills: Patterns of Agreement and Discrepancy among Teachers, Parents, and Students.

Objectives: This study explores the patterns of agreement and discrepancy among informants (teachers, parents, and students) in the domains of the Social Emotional Skills Scale Assessment System-Social Skills Scales (SESAS-SS), which is a translation of the Social Skills Improvement System-Rating Scales (SSIS-RS) for use in Spain.

Methods: The sample is composed of students, 88 teachers, and 98 parents from Spanish secondary schools. Inter-rater agreements have been assessed, calculating the Pearson correlation coefficients among pairs of raters, effect size indices, and intraclass correlation coefficients at the subscale and total scale level.
