New presumptive identification test for Clostridium perfringens: reverse CAMP test.

The reverse CAMP test proved to be a highly sensitive test since 97.0% of all Clostridium perfringens cultures tested gave an easily discernible positive reaction.

Preparation and use of erythrocyte-globulin conjugates to Lassa virus in reversed passive hemagglutination and inhibition.

Conditions were defined for functional covalent coupling of anti-Lassa virus globulins to glutaraldehyde-fixed chicken erythrocytes. Tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate in a reaction mixture containing not more than 0.01 M NaCl produced uniformly good conjugates which were used in reversed passive hemagglutination (RPH) and reversed passive hemagglutination inhibition (RPHI) tests to detect Lassa virus antigens in infected cell cultures and specific antigens in Vero cell cultures.

Concomitant axial cineangiography and barium esophagography in the evaluation of vascular rings.

Six vascular rings were evaluated using axial biplane cineangiography and concomitant barium esophagography. Three patients had a double aortic arch, two had a right aortic arch and aberrant left subclavian artery with a foreshortened left ligamentum arteriosum, and one had a pulmonary vascular sling. Barium was administered in the esophagus of the anesthetized patient followed by cineangiography.

Children's pure-tone detection.

A three-alternative, forced-choice adaptive procedure, with suitable reinforcement, is appropriate for testing auditory sensitivity in young children. Data obtained using this rigidly specified test protocol support previous findings of reduced auditory sensitivity in young children.

Recognition of developing left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in complete transposition of the great arteries.

In the months following balloon atrial septostomy for complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA), clinical deterioration is often ascribed to closure of the septostomy. Of 16 neonates with TGA, 5 showed early clinical deterioration. Each had an adequate septostomy at operation.

Performance of children aged 9 to 17 years on a test of speech intelligibility in noise using sentence material with controlled word predictability.

Performance of children aged 9 to 17 years on the SPIN test (Speech Perception in Noise) is described. The 11- and 13-year-olds performed significantly poorer than 15- and 17-year-olds, and this difference occurred primarily for high-predictability sentences presented at a O-dB signal-to-babble ratio. Performance of nine-year-olds was significantly poorer than performance of 11-year-olds.

An outbreak of hepatitis B from tattooing.

An outbreak of 34 cases of hepatitis B not all of them notified, is described. 31 was tattooed by one artist; 3 were secondary infections. All primary infections occurred in males aged 16-28 years.

Children's understanding of monosyllabic nouns in quiet and in noise.

A four-alternative, forced choice adaptive procedure was used to measure the lowest intensity at which children could identify monosyllabic nouns that had been standardized to be understandable (at comfortable listening levels) to inner city, 3-year-old children. Results showed no age-related performance changes when the words were presented against a 12-talker babble or against filtered noise. In quit, however, performance improved between the ages of 5 and 10 years.

Left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in transposition of the great arteries: an angiographic study of 74 cases.

Recent advances in techniques of angiocardiography now allow highly accurate assessment of the anatomy of the left ventricle in patients with transposition of the great arteries. The cineangiograms of 225 children with transposition were reviewed using axial cineangiographic techniques and 33 percent were found to have significant left ventricular outflow tract obstruction with or without coexisting ventricular septal defects. The varieties of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and the associated ventricular septal defects found in this group of patients are described, illustrated and correlated.

Diagnostic significance of selected serum enzymes in a rat heatstroke model.

A total of 171 untrained, unacclimatized, and unanesthetized rats were either exercised to exhaustion at one of four ambient temperatures (5, 20, 26, or 30 degrees C), or were restrained and heated at an ambient temperature of 41.5 degrees C until their core temperatures reached a preselected end point between 41.0 and 43.

Plasma levels of oestrone and oestradiol-17beta in postmenopausal women.

The plasma oestrone and oestradiol levels of 34 postmenopausal women were studied and related to various of their other characteristics. The plasma oestrone and oestradiol-17beta levels (Mean +/- SE) were, respectively, 32.09 +/- 4.

Chest film detection of coronary artery calcification. The value of the CAC triangle.

Eighty-six adult patients were studied by PA chest film and fluoroscopy for coronary artery calcification (CAC). A triangular area (CAC triangle) along the left mid-heart border of the PA chest film was used in identifying CAC. Of 57 patients, 24 (42%) with CAC observed fluoroscopically had a strongly suspected or positive CAC triangle.

Accumulation of 1-trans-2,3-epoxysuccinic acid and succinic acid by Paecilomyces varioti.

The biogenic acids 1-trans-2,3-epoxysuccinic acid and succinic acid accumulate in decationized refiner's blackstrap molasses shake cultures of Paecilomyces varioti Bainier. The maximum accumulation of 1-trans-2,3-epoxysuccinic acid occurred in a medium which contained Cu2+ and Fe3+ at concentrations of 1.0 and 2.

Plain film findings of anatomically corrected malposition: its association with juxtaposition of the atrial appendages and right aortic arch.

Three cases of anatomically corrected malposition of the great arteries (ACM) are presented. The association of ACM with juxtaposition of the atrial appendages and right aortic arch is emphasized. The unique plain film findings of anatomically corrected malposition include: (a) 1-position of the ascending aorta; (b) discrete convexity of the mid-left heart border in association with findings of an abnormal right atrial border (left juxtaposition of the atrial appendages); and (c) right aortic arch.

Axial cineangiography in congenital heart disease. Section I. Concept, technical and anatomic considerations.

Cineangiographic axial techniques were designed to overcome the limitations of conventional angiography in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease. Two basic patient (or equipment) maneuvers are involved; 1) long axis of the heart is aligned perpendicular to the X-ray beam, and 2) rotation of patient results in the heart being radiographically sectioned at 30 degree angles. To accomplish this with fixed vertical and horizontal X-ray tubes, three positions were developed: 1) "hepato-clavicular," "4 chamber," 2) "long axial oblique," 3) "anterior-posterior axial.
